“The fish cake appetizer was pretty good.”
“people: appetizer, lunch entrees, drinks, sharing soup ( huge portion) with tip”
“have eaten a lot of authentic thai food, but I must admit, this thai food is truly made for Americans and that is a shame because Americans will never taste what true thai food is supposed to taste like if it is bland and not prepared properly.”
“With so many good thai restaurants in the city, I'm surprised that this place has such a good reputation.”
“The prices are extremely low despite the beautiful atmosphere and attentive service.”
“On top of it the prices are amazing.”
Star of Siam, located just off the bustle of Michigan Avenue, is a must for anyone who loves Thai food. The space is very open, with red
brick and exposed pipes, which are painted red to match the brick. The color scheme is carried through in the red cushions and colorful wall hangings. Not your usual place to go for Thai food, this locale serves a standard Thai menu in an urban warehouse setting rather than in a storefront dive. This has led one reviewer to call it "yuppie-Thai," which is, perhaps, not so far off the mark given the young, urban, professional crowd often found dining here.
For a quick lunch on a busy afternoon or an inexpensive meal when you find yourself in the heart of downtown with nowhere to eat, Star of Siam is a good choice.
…
The best thai restaurant in Chicago. The food at Star of Siam is exceptional!! I have been to this restaurant several times over the years and the food is consistently outstanding. The prices are extremely low despite the beautiful atmosphere and attentive service. I highly recommend Star of Siam if you are looking for a great thai food at an affordable price and do not want to sacrifice ambience.
*. Star of Siam is my favorite Thai restaurant. Chicken staty, CRs are especially good apps, and for entrees nothing beats the Panang Chicken and Basil Chicken. The panang is gpeanut-oily, dark and thick, but if you're not counting calories you shouldn't miss it!
A spacious setting and fast service make this River North Thai restaurant a delightful lunch and after-work spot..
In Short
The lofted ceiling and giant windows create a sunny setting. For a more authentic experience, request a sunken table with cushions for seats. The dishes tend toward the spicy, but can be requested mild. Beef and broccoli has a mix of ginger and oyster sauce. Chicken satay is especially tender, with real breast meat. For dessert, go for green tea ice cream or warm star custard with hints of caramel and nuts.
Just Ok. I love Thai food but Star of Siam made me feel unsatisfied. I've noticed a lot of Thai Restaurants use white meat to cook their chicken dishes and this totally destroys the flavor. The meat comes out dry and bland since the chicken isn't marinated. The beef is also treated the same way. Marinate your meats please! Tons of veggies are on your meat dished and can leave big eaters with a half empty stomach. Overall, its just OK and havent been back there for a year.
Awesome, affordable Thai.
If you're walking, don't give up trying to find it! It's tucked down the stairs off E. Illinois. But once you make it there, you're in for a treat!
We enjoyed 2 appetizers, teas, a large soup and entree for $30. Wow. The chicken satay is great and especially recommended.
Great curry dishes!. only one location left for this place-if you're in the area it's a good choice. the curry sauce and peanut sauces here are rich but luscious. can be busy at lunch but service maintains. beautiful atmosphere.
Great Stuff But You May Have to Talk!!!!. This is an excellent restaurant that has adapted and succeeded and developed over the last 20 years. From my perspective the only issue I have had with them is in getting true "Thai-Style" cusine. In their defense, I understand why. They believe -and with good reason I am sure! - most Americans are not prepared to appreciate this. At the same time, I heartily miss the days of the opening of the restaurant when the Steamed Curry Fish was truly an enlightening experience! Please give this as an option again, and don't make me beg for true ethnic spicing, please trust me!!!
could be better. The only thing that really impressed me was the deco - unique hats, and displays... apart from that, the food was mediocre, and I hate places that charge you extra for rice... when it should ALWAYS accompany asian entrees. It is equivalent to charging extra for taco shells when you order tacos. Do NOT order any shrimp entrees because you will only get 4 med. size shrimps - expensive when you are charge $7.00. The fish cake appetizer was pretty good. Not going back.
EXCELLENT !!!. This is my FAVORITE Thai restaurant. The food is EXCELLENT and the prices are very reasonable. The pad thai is to die for!
Un thai-ed. With all the good Thai restaurants in Chicago, this one should be very nervous.
