Great dishes to cool off with at Taste of Chicago.
Both the gazpacho and the mango rice pudding I had at their booth at the Taste of Chicago were so tasty and so refreshing. Whoever designed the menu deserves two thumbs up for anticipating the humidity and heat and designing menu items that hot and thirsty Taste go-ers will love.
Aside from beer, the gazpacho may be the only non-sweet dish to cool off with. The tasting portion is a little stingy, but it more than makes up for size with taste. A large chunk of avocado sits in a chunky tomato soup with onions and chives. If this blazing weather keeps up, they’ll be sold out. Plus, this carries Humana’s seal of approval for healthy Taste options. So you’ll feel better about indulging in the mango rice pudding afterward.
steak house?. In the very beginig I was a litle intimidated by the decor all framed artwork and the prices ($39 NY strip) however at the table waiter brougth (without been asked) a taste of some house special wine sangiovese from italy wich was delicius and unexpensive and told us a litle bit about his recomendations for that evenig, after he took our order he said that's way to much food so he offered to split the dishes, at the end we had some tuna sashimi w chopsticks and stuff, a meatloaf with mash potatoes and creamy spinach have to say main dishes come with a side and the best part of the evening was the cobbler that also comes with ice cream, since then grill on the alley is a favorite spot for my family and friends, best value in the magnificent mile.
The Best Spot on the Magnificent Mile!!. From the moment I walked through the doors I knew it was going to be an awesome experience. The atmosphere at The Grill captures the very essence of Chicago. The bartenders were skilled artists at their craft and whipped up awesome tasty treats for us to try. The wine list is impressive - top notch. The staff is very attentive and went above and beyond what you would normally expect. Let's not forget about the food. That is the best part. First of all they have the best crab cake I've personally ever had, hands down. If you don't order it, you've missed the boat. I had the pan-fried trout and it knocked my socks off. I would recommend it to anyone. If you haven't tried The Grill yet, stop reading this and make your reservations!!
Best service. I've been to The Grill many times - mostly eating in the bar area. First - they know how to make a whiskey sour. That won my allegiance straight off. And it's consistent. Everything has been great from the kitchen - the appetizers make this a perfect place for late-night groups. There's such variety on the menu - from burgers to steaks - or seafood. The service is stellar - whoever hires here does a top-notch job. So friendly and helpful. Try this place - no disappointment.
Avoid at all costs. In attentive service. Orders totally mixed up. Salad looked like compost. Waiter had no service experience. Wine list is very expensive.
Wonderful steak. I don't know much about steaks, and I haven't been to a lot of the famous ones in Chicago, but absolutely LOVED this place. The steak was awesome. The server was very helpful and the ambience is great.
No mere hotel restaurant, this classy, upscale Westin dining room on Michigan Avenue is a destination in itself..
The Scene
Very masculine, with warm amber lighting and high-backed, black leather booths--the room buzzes with the sounds of deals in the making. Caricatures and drawings in mismatched frames cover the rich mahogany walls. Though it can lag at lunch, service is impeccable--and knowledgeable--at dinner.
The Food
The classic American menu focuses on red meat, pasta and seafood, all served in larger-than-life portions. Seared tuna starter has an international twist, sprinkled generously with sesame seeds and served sushi-style with chopsticks, wasabi and soy sauce. Delicious. Piquant peppered filet medallions are tender in texture, spiky in flavor, while a tangy Cajun sauce juices up the special tequila-marinated fried shrimp. Other dishes to try: flaky, big-as-your-head chicken pot pie, classic chopped Cobb salad and savory gravlax (sliced, marinated salmon with dill sauce).
Typical Hotel Fare. This is not a great steak house, or even a worthwhile restaurant. Basically, I go hear for the bar menu which has a good burger and a decent steak tartare. The dinner menu, although, falls apart in taste and quality. Specifically, the sauces and demi glaces taste canned and overly salted. Lastly, the wines by the glass are a huge disappointment given the low light atmosphere.
Our new favorite restaurant. We were staying at the Westin for the weekend and only walked into the Grille because the weather was preventing us from walking to our original destination --- What a Wonderful Surprise! The service was beyond excellent, the atmosphere was romantic, and the food was some of the best cuisine we've had in a long time. The wait staff was very helpful in our selections. I had the seared scallops with carrot puree --- I was somewhat apprehensive about the carrot puree, but I can't wait to go back for more! It was like Thanksgiving sweet potatoes, only BETTER. My husband had the king filet and was thrilled with his selection. The dessert was split between four of us and we still had left overs. We live in Chicago and we recommend this restaurant to everyone we know.
