In Short – A seascape painted wall in the foyer of the hotel draws curious passers-by into a small, smoky, carpeted room equipped with scant seating, a single television and a few old-timer regulars. The loose nautical theme is most apparent in the bar's name and a life preserver on the wall. The small bar serves mostly inexpensive draft beer, but can whip up any classic cocktail, served in small, worn-in glassware.
Seriously...

Spent a couple days at the Cass Hotel, so after going out for the evening we stopped in for one more before heading to the room. What a dive! Some guy was trying to steal beer from over the bar and all of a sudden these guy came out of nowhere and beat him and his buddy down. They claimed to be security from somewhere and then were holding them for the cops. After a minute or two they let them go, crazy time. I was very uncomfortable at this place. Anyone who thinks this is a good place has never acctually been even to an average bar. What a pit and very dirty.

This place is a refreshing break from the usual overpriced River North dreck, and is always hoppin', although a bit crowded. The jukebox is great and the bartenders are a hell of a lot of fun. Always a necessary stop downtown for me.
fun and reasonable
