Editorial Review for World Gym – by Drew Pisarra

The Scene
The company logo is a muscle-bound gorilla deadlifting a heavily loaded barbell, but World Gym's focus goes beyond just weights to include a number of fitness options. Joe Gold's first Southern California muscle mecca--the second being the eponymous Gold's--has spawned hundreds of neighborhood gyms everywhere, from Mentor, Ohio, to Taichung, Taiwan. Design and amenities vary from franchise to franchise to reflect the owner and the community as much as, if not more than, the original location.

The Workout
All World Gym fitness centers are required to be at least 9,500 square feet. That means ample room for free weights, medicine balls, treadmills and sundry machines; classes in Spinning, yoga and the like fill out the group-oriented fare.

The locker room is kinda dirty. No towel service. The AC system is poor, you won't notice it as much in the summer, but in the winter the windows fog up and the air is pretty stale. The classes are good, but often get over crowded. In general it more of a weight-lifers gym When I joined World Gym last August, I was told that I could cancel at anytime as long as I pay a $50. My roommate joined at the same time, they told him though there was a $50 fee, if he came in to the gym they would cancel his account out for free. I got a bike for the summer and didn't like the gym, so I went in to cancel. I was told that I would have to send a form to a separate company. ASF International. While my account still would get charged. After contacting ASF I was told that I could not cancel unless I was permanently injured or I moved more than 20 miles away. After reviewing the contract I found this to be true and even though I have not used the sub standard gym I got stuck paying the rest of my contract. I also asked the sales rep to write directly on the contract "Cancel at anytime. $50 fee." Which he said he did, however I later found to not be true. The trainers who sell the contracts lie to their clients to get them to sign. When you try to speak with anyone on site they will just refer you to ASF International, who takes several weeks or months to get back to you. Do not join this gym.

Pros: Good weight lifter gym.

Cons: No towel service. Staff. ASF International. AC system.
