Editorial Review for Martyrs' – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
On a lonely stretch of Lincoln Avenue, Martyrs' is cheap, has free parking and books some great music. The dark, nondescript bar remains intimate despite crowd size; sight lines are super throughout. For bigger acts, dinner tables are cleared out to make room for dancing.

The Draw
Martyrs' hosts a variety genres, including traditional Irish music on Mondays, jam bands and New Orleans brass. For something completely different, come to the Big "C" Jamboree, a popular rockabilly open-mic night the first Thursday of every month. Thank co-owner Ray Quinn for the versatile booking, which has also included South American and African bands. Before opening the club in 1995, he did booking stints at both Schubas and the Vic. The kitchen serves salads and hot sandwiches until two hours before close, and brunch on Sunday. Selections from 20 bottled and draft beers are available all night.

Every first Thursday of the month is a major Rockabilly night for local bands. The scenery is mixed with hardcore Rockers and hardcore Rockabilly cats. There are a lot of people from the swing dancing crowd, too. I love this place, really, I do. Oarking is right around the corner, but you'd better get there early for a table. But really, if you need a table during the Big C, you aren't doing it right! Dance all night, the guys love to dance and the girls are waiting for them to ask. Heh, sometimes, a girl might ask the guy to dance.

Pros: Drinks are mixed perfectly

Cons: Tables or seating

what's there to say about Martyr's ? sometimes the music lineup forces one to enter and then sometimes you have to ask yourself, WHO in the heck is that bald guy at the door who can't count money with two hands? the drinks are bad, the food is worse, but sometimes, just sometimes, the music, is amazing. like the other night, The Cliks, in town again from Toronto. Who would have thought THEY, would come right into my neighborhood and play for me yet again ? The opener dude was scary and I have no idea how that guy got in, but Martyr's is legendary, and I hope it keeps great bands coming thru Chicago.

Pros: MUSIC

Cons: the bald guy and the bartenders
