Editorial Review for Guthrie's Tavern – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
Guthrie's is a comfortable and fun neighborhood tavern. Stepping through the doorway is like entering a favorite cousin's family room. Cozy tables and chairs fill the front of the room, and line the wall opposite the bar itself, which runs the length of the room. The screened-in back proch is a great spot to play a game and hang out.

The Draw
The tumble of Yahtzee dice can be heard over the friendly din, and you may feel compelled to blurt out the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question from a game at the next table. The beer selection is adequate as is the bar food. Free baskets of pretzels come with Dijon mustard for dipping. Be forewarned, Guthries gets really packed on the weekends, and the homey comfort disappears. It's better to go on a weeknight, when you can find a seat and the game you want to play in the cabinet.

We've been there a few times now after Cubs games and each time it has been great. It's a few blocks west of Wrigley on Addison and the walk is definitely worth it, if just to save your sanity from the Cubs crowds on Clark Street. The front section by the bar has been a bit congested the times we have been there but it was never as crowed as any of the Wrigleyville icons. Plus, there always seems to be ample seating available in the back and in the enclosed porch. And you just can't beat sitting with friends, downing a couple brews, and playing Jenga. If there's one thing I would say is somewhat negative is that they have a very sparse food menu. They do have the standard appetizer fare but not a lot more than that. They do have a selection of menus from other restaurants in the area that will deliver to the tavern so that's nice. All in all, I've had a great experience each and every time I've been there.

Pros: No crazy Wrigley crowds, good beer selection, the games!

Cons: Sparse menu (mostly appetizers), it takes longer to gain solace at the bar after a Cubs loss due to the walk involved

I love kicking back at Guthrie's! The ceiling alone can keep you entertained for hours. Bring your friends, grab a game, and a pint and let the hours fly by! A great alternative from the Clark Street bars after the game

Pros: great beers on tap

Cons: limited food menu
