In Short – Founded in 1901 in Chicago by Charles R. Walgreen Sr., this neighborhood pharmacy has grown to be one of the nation's largest drugstore chains. Each store carries 25,000 different items--from cleaning products to electronics and greeting cards. Store features include a computerized system connecting pharmacies nationwide via satellite, grocery-store food aisles, one-hour photofinishing and an automated phone system for prescription refills and pre-arranged pickup times. Other services include in-store flu shots and childhood immunizations.
Editor's Tips
- The Extras:
- Most of Walgreens' free-standing stores have drive-thru windows for prescription pickups.
- Save Time:
- Walgreens' website offers online shopping with free shipping for qualifying orders of $39 or more.
Buyer beware
by Concerned in Lakeview at Citysearch
Be careful to check every medication or supplement you buy for yourself and your children. The Walgreens on Broadway has twice in the last year be caught selling expired over the counter medicine. When confronted, they offered a refund and an under the breath "sorry". It is mixed in with new batches, so even if one is OK, check all purchased items.
- Pros: In Lakeview
- Cons: Unresponsive management, expired medicines
