Dr. Wax
True to Chicago's neighborhood-centric attitude, this store reflects Lincoln Park's local music diet..
The Scene
This is one of four Dr. Wax locations in Chicagoland, and the only real similarity among the stores is a penchant for disheveled stacks of unmarked merchandise filling every nook and cranny. But there is method to the madness, as the competent staff will demonstrate.
The Goods
Besides new music (including a great indie selection), you'll find music memorabilia and deals on more than 15,000 used CDs. Worthy of special note is the Hyde Park location, where wax and CDs of both the latest in hip-hop and the most prized of old-school jazz fill rack after rack and bin after bin (only the legendary Jazz Record Mart can do better in the latter category). The encyclopedist in either genre could spend hours at that Dr. Wax, despite the comparative small size of the room. The fringes of all music are represented in the new releases section. Students and hip-hop connoisseurs who populate the neighborhood couldn't be better served under one roof.
Music.
You name it and they have it in some form.
The old lps are neat to collect. I go to the Hyde Park location also. They offer new and used tapes and CD's.
