Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder

What a great place for a huge, old-school feast. Cozy dining room, cheap wine and great pizza pot pies. Plus, a basement wood panelled dining room that is the coziest, warmest place for a winter night.

very long wait. This place was referred to me by a friend so I was very excited to try it out. My boyfriend and I went there on a Friday night around 9:30pm thinking it would be a good time to go with out much of a wait. We got there and the place was PACKED. It is a very small building not very accommodating to the large amount of hungry people waiting to eat. Most people had to wait outside. We went there pretty hungry and disappointed to see that there was such a long wait. We got in to find out that they do not take names, their is one guy that is expected to remember all of the faces of everyone that comes in, and the order in which they came in. After waiting at the very crowed bar for an hour and a half we were finally seated. I guess the guy did remember us after all. The food was really good. We got a salad to start which came with three very tasty homemade dressings that you mix together that makes one delicious mix. With the salad we got their specialty bread. Which comes to you so large it is falling off of the sides of the plate. I have to say that due to this bread alone it was worth the wait. For our main course we each got a small pizza potpie. You can order the crust in either white or whole wheat. It comes stocked with meat and loaded with cheese. The only thing I think would really make the pizza potpie better would be if you could pick the toppings that come inside. Don't let the fact that you can't pick the toppings scare you though, because they are prepared fresh you can still subtract those items which you do not want. After all was said and done we both left very satisfied with very full belly's. =D

Come hungry! Come often!. Yum! Great food. I'm hungry just thinking about it. Just remember to come hungry and bring cash as they do not take credit cards

Don't forget to order the Mediterranean Bread!. One of my favorite places in Chicago. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. There is not enough seating so you may have to wait but it's worth the wait! The host does not take your name down. But don't be alarmed, he will remember your face and when you are next to be seated. For 2 people, the one pounder pizza pot-pie and an order of the Mediterranean Bread makes a perfect meal. Don't forget to order the mediterranean bread!!

One in a Million Experience. Have not been there lately, but I am overjoyed that the greeter is still there. He makes those who demand personal service cringe! He has a mind that snaps you face to your name and puts a unique number to you. You are never slighted! Some consider this bad service...but he is unique at best.

The Mediterranean Bread is over the top! The Grinders are unique at best. Such Ingredients!

The history of the neighborhood is awesome....across from the St. Valentines Massacre! Love this town! Why buy a plane ticket with so many great Chicago places.....Try Half Shell just North and West on Diversy and you will be ready for a HAT TRICK even if you try White Castle's next!

Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder. I don't know how the maitre d remembers you by face only. He knows exactly how long it

will be for your table too! Order the Meditteranean Bread for an appetizer and try to

sit at the round table in the window.

The best "POTPIE" pizza in the universe. I first thought the waiter was spilling over a mushroom the first time I went there. What a delight to see the chhese and veggies when he flipped it. Order the wheat crust, just because it's different.

Awesome. I moved away a few years ago but this was one of my favorite restaurants and still is. Everytime I come back to visit, I must go here. This is such a wonderful cozy place to take a friend or date to try and to experience Chicago. If you haven't been and have the chance to go here, DO IT. The line is usually long so skip lunch and get there as soon as they open for dinner and you shouldn't have to wait. Get the bread, salad(mix the dressings as suggested) and don't forget the pizza pie. IF you think you still have room get dessert. Just enjoy this wonderful place and all the lovely character of this charming building. Take a walk to the zoo afterwards and just enjoy one of the best restaurants and best citys!!!!!!!!!!

well worth the wait. and let me tell you, the wait is usually long (unless you get there when they first open)

but.....this pizza is worth it! 1 pounder, whole wheat, with sausage and the largest whole mushrooms you could possibly imagine.....

don't forget to get a salad to share and the meditteranean bread!!!!!!!!

Go for the bread. Wknd wait could be lengthy if you don't get there shortly before the dinner hour. No reservations taken and they only take CASH. The Mediterainean bread is out of the world. Couple it with a salad. Be sure to mix together the garlic and poppyseed salad dressings, fabulous!!! Casual, cozy and fun. Not recommended for group seating. Take a walk through Lincoln Park/Zoo afterwards. Perfect place to take Chicago visitors.

ANYTHING BUT THE POT PIE. Get the grinder, get the mediterranean bread, get the salad, get the mediterranean bread, get the dessert, GET THE MEDITERRANEAN BREAD! But if you're looking for pizza, or even something resembling pizza, you'll have to go somewhere else. This is 'franco-american' spagetti sauce in a bread bowl, covered with cheese. My mom served me this as a kid.

Did I mention the meditarranean bread? This alone is worth your time. Match it up with a dinner salad and it's one of Chicago's true values. Pizza? Maybe tomorrow.
