Very fresh sushi!. My roommate and I went here last week after reading about it on Citysearh.com and we loved it! It will be our number one sushi spot, especially since we only live 3 blocks away from it! We both got different things - she had sushi and I had maki - and we both loved our choices. Very good price, extremely friendly staff, very fresh and 'non-fishy' seafood!! We will be back...possibly tonight! :-)
A complete GEM. I can't say enough good things about Torajiro. My husband and I have eaten here so many times it's probably into the hundreds. The sushi chef, Peter, is extremely nice. The food couldn't be fresher or of higher quality, and the atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. The prices are very reasonable, and the "following" is so strong that customers regularly send Peter postcards, which he displays on the walls. HIGHLY recommended.
Subterranean sushi nook serves the standards, plus a variety of fried items, in the Lakeview neighborhood..
In Short
This below-street-level spot has little more than a step-down entrance announcing itself to pedestrians. Diners sit at one of seven tables flush with a bank of wood-framed mirrors to the left, or around the small sushi bar to the right. A variety of nigri is available, but maki like the Chicago roll (eel, omelette, cucumber, avocado), add interest to the menu. Appetizers lilt toward fried items like tempura and gyoza (fried dumplings).
Great community place.
Great cheap sushi and sashimi, perfect for those instant cravings...
but really, the chef isn't Japanese... it's funny the previous reviewer was so sure he was... cuz umm, I don't think you can find a Japanese person with the surname Yao.
He has learned really well though... and the atmosphere is really down home and friendly.
Best Sushi in Town.
The food here is great; I've tried many many other sushi places, and I always come back to this one. In fact, I've moved to a different neighborhood, and now I have 3 sushi places within 2 blocks of me (all of which I've tried), and/but I *STILL* go back to Torajiro (or call for delivery).
The chef is great, and will get to know your preferences, and will do special orders or custom anything. Very friendly and personable.
The space is nicely/tastefully done, and could be either a relaxed casual hang-out or a nice place for dinner with a date, but it could be a little bit bigger with more tables.
Excellent price for satisfying sushi.
It may be located in a sub-basement, but Torajiro has very fresh, very large pieces of nigiri for such reasonable prices. The salmon and hamachi are $1.75/piece, the surf clam, mackerel, tuna, red snapper, and ebi are only $1.50/piece.
Although the chefs are not authentic Japanese sushi chefs from Japan, they've learned very well.
Best Sushi in Midwest. Small place, incredibly consistant food. High quality, very personal, great atmosphere.
Forget the trendy joints.. The first piece of tuna sushi I got at Torajiro surprised me. It was easily the best, freshed piece of fish I had ever gotten, and the single portion was enough to make another 2 pieces. The food is simply fantastic. The service is always attentive, and if you get even a little weary of the "wear black" scene, you should get in here. The food is just as good as the ultra-fashionable places around Chicago, and it's not a chore to get in, get stuffed, and get out. Prices are moderate, and the head chef, Peter, is a delightful person who will get to know you by face and even name if you get in there enough. This is a nice place where a customer is treated comforably and nicely in every way. Frequent this cool little joint. You'll be happy.
Great sushi - kicked up a notch!!!. I had been wanting to try sushi for a very long time and one day while passing by Torajiro Sushi I decided to give it a try. The staff was very pleasant and when I told the chef it was my first time trying sushi, he was very attentive and helpful explaining and suggesting different things and guiding me in how to order. Since then I've tried many other sushi restaurants and none compares to the quality, freshness and taste of the fish at Torajiro. If you want quality, visit Torajiro Sushi.
