The Scene
This tiny breakfast-and-lunch-only nook is a charming local institution, filling with young parents and professionals from the well-scrubbed neighborhood. The narrow space fills quickly; on weekends, you may wait an hour or more, but it's worth it.
The Food
Breakfast and lunch items get a trendy tweak here, from eggs benedict with prosciutto and truffle hollandaise with potato wild mushroom hash to chicken mango chutney salad and steak and gorgonzola sandwich. Dining in the a.m.? You gotta do the stuffed French toast. Brimming with strawberries, these tall, crispy, creamy strips are light-as-air and delicious, even without maple syrup. Other plates worth trying include a fat, surprisingly spicy breakfast burrito (must be the jalapenos) and luscious Nutella crepes with crushed pecans.

I hate reading these recent reviews where they 'Jill-bash' -- as 8+ year customers, my wife Jacky and I have gone there through dating...to marriage...to children...to currently pregnant again, and Jill has seen us through it all becoming a friend as well as touchstone for our weekend brunch or quick weekday breakfast or lunch when we can steal away. She LOVES kids; always makes our daughters and all other children welcome, and the only time she 'snarks' is when yuppies (and uh - yeah, I'm one. I confess.) refuse to drop their attitudes of entitlement when they step in there (no talking on cell phones and not understanding that 'full' party attendance is mandatory being the two big rules). She's a breath of fresh air for us, and we love hearing the staff's stories (they're all great too - esp. Felix) -- and oh yeah: the FOOD -- crabby eggs benedict, oatmeal, bacon, stuffed french toast -- all must-taste draws...and great sandwches and salads for lunch. We have always come to Toast...and we always will...but Toast without Jill would be a sad place, indeed.

I had heard this was a good breakfast place...so my wife and I went there in the morning to celebrate a birthday with another couple. Upon our entry, there was a table for 4 open...so we thought perfect! However, the waitress/manager was extremely unfriendly and told my wife and I to sit down on the bar stool and wait till our other two friends walked in. She refused to let us sit at the open table, even though our friends were just parking. Before our friends could arrive, another couple walked in and the waitress gave the table for 4 to them!! We inquired why and she said that is just our policy. She became even ruder at this point and essentially did not care if we left. She refused to give us her name and simply walked away. The other posts talking about poor customer service are TRUE!!!! Do not bother going to this place....you will be disappointed. You may even end up eating food that has been 'altered' by the "manager" Don't take my word...read all the other reviews on Google reviews.

Jills the owner/hostess is the rudest person I've ever encountered at a restaurant. Its sad she feels the need to snap and give icey looks to her customers. My friends and I literally did nothing, just simply told her we had a party of 7. She immediately snapped and said "we can not accomidate you". We didnt mind splitting up into groups, so we suggested this to her, she rolled her eyes and said "fine, i guess." Im not sure what warranted this rude and abrassive response. I was embarassed I had recommended this spot to my friends. Once I told a few co-workers what had happened, several of them agreed, you have to stomach Jill the owner/manager in order to eat at Toast. I say skip stomaching the rude owner, just go to the Toast in bucktown. They will make you feel right at home and will great you with a smile. Let me know once she is fired, then I'll consider going back.
