The Scene – This velvet-curtained, candlelit corner bar flaunts the body of a lounge, but its heart is pure rock and roll. The long, L-shaped room offers table seating under blue, space-age lamps up front and below wall-mounted cases of 1,000 bootleg CDs and tapes on the sides. Cushiony couches provide seating in an alcove that also has a pool table. Photos of the rock pantheon (Dylan, Clapton, Dead, et al)--many donated by a Rolling Stone photographer--dominate the walls and appear under glass tabletops. An inconspicuous back room with separate bar and sound system hosts DJs weekends.…
what a jukebox!
by filchambers at Citysearch
I love jukeboxes, and this one is no exception. With all manner of records, from 33rpm right up to the new fangled 78rpm...
- Pros: best jukebox in town
- Cons: it's a jukebox
True Soul in Lincoln Park
by BuddyHinton at Citysearch
One of the few bars in the area that subscribes to the true pub atmosphere--no conversation killing plasmas, only 1 tube playing live concert DVDs w/ the exception of worthwhile chicago sporting events. The jukebox is a Chicago mainstay catering to those dialed into music that matters while the back bar DJs kick out funk & old-school hip-hop that drips with soul. After seeing the photos, its not hard to imagine kings of leon (among others) partying here long before selling out the enormo-domes... A Dutch couple there on the recommendation of "Lonely Planet USA," said it was the coolest bar they'd been to in the states, granted they'd only been in detroit up to that point... Bottom line, AliveOne is a solid neighborhood pub with deep musical roots and not a flash in the Lincoln Park pan.
- Pros: At times, live music in back during the week
- Cons: Can get butts to nuts on busy weekend nights
2$ Pints, and a boatload of live music.
by jns597 at Citysearch
I've been going to this bar for a number of years, and I have to say it is probably my favorite bar in Chicago to meet up with friends and grab a drink. There is always great live music playing, and on Thursdays, they usually have live bands in the back. Tuesday, however, is a real treat at this bar. All pints are 2$ with an exception to imported beer which is only 2.50. The beer on tap is phenominal, and every day is a different drink deal. J-mo shots are only somewhere between 3-4 dollars, so you can turn up the pace of drinking with some Irish car bombs. The staff are my favorite part of this bar! Everyone is really friendly and the service is amazingly fast. The overall mood in the bar is usually pretty relaxed, but can get going in the back when they have the DJ spinning. I would recommend this place to anyone.
- Pros: Amazing decoration, being in this bar puts you in a good mood. Good deals, amazing staff, "chill" crowd.
- Cons: None, but if you don't like hippies, you're likely to run into some there.
