Editorial Review for Burwood Tap – by Jennifer Olvera
The Scene
Colorful vintage decor, including a dangling tuba and '20s-era bicycle, hearken back to Prohibition (long before the bar's and its patrons' times), which gives a sense of history to the completely gentrified, yuppie-studded surroundings. Although the clientele ebbs and flows depending on day and time, a prototypical comfy-in-cargo-khakis crowd prevails throughout Burwood Tap's two rowdy rooms.
The Draw
Generally friendly servers supply Irish car bombs to frats in hats, while stuck-in-the-past singles mouth words to juke-driven Def Leppard, No Doubt and Jovi jams others might not believe were paid for. Oddly not upper-crust given its locale, average-Joe drinkers suck on Labatt while ladies energize with Absolut Red Bulls, rocks. Jameson and Jack shots are cranked out as the night wears on, while a pool table--and meandering room--become increasingly sacred.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoWhile the bar doesn't serve traditional bar food, frozen pizzas are cooked up in a toaster oven for those in a pinch.
Look GoodIf you're looking for some intimacy, the back room, complete with its own full bar, can be rented out.

The Burwood used to be the local spot and it is one of the oldest taverns in Chicago. But change of management led to the introduction of pink christmas lights, an unplugged jukebox, the most expensive pool table, unfriendly bartenders (most of the cocktail servers and door men are still good) and the manager's IPOD belching out Madonna, show tunes, and bad rap while the Bears, Cubs, and Sox are silenced. Need I say more.
Pros: In the neighborhood.
Cons: Not a good neighbor.

The Burwood Tap (or the wood) is your quintessential neighborhood bar. We were in during the week and enjoyed a free buffet. The bartender was friendly and seemed to know everyone. It was full of young and old alike - all I would imagine were regulars. With that said, it doesn't shock me that it won Best of Citysearch 2006 neighborhood bar. We'll be back soon!
Pros: Perfect if you're looking for a LP neighborhood bar!
