Editorial Review for Cycle Smithy – by Colin Murphy

The Scene
The windows of this bi-level Lincoln Park shop are filled with old and unusual bikes collected by the owner, but the densely packed showroom stocks the newest by some of the most respected names in high-end cycling, like Colnago, Merlin, Kestrel, and Bianchi. Aside from a few relatively inexpensive hybrids and city bikes, the selection is canted towards racers and those who dress like them, with prices often into used-car territory.

Upstairs, Downstairs
Upstairs are clothing and built bikes: inventory is about evenly split between mountain and road, with tandems, triathlon, and track bikes tipping the scales to the roadies. Downstairs are repairs, a vast wheel-goods selection, accessories, and parts a la carte. The latest composites and gram-shaving alloys are well represented, and the tool selection ranges from essential to obscure. The staff is helpful but won't accost casual browsers, and encourages test rides and proper
fitting of new bikes.

Insider Tips

Early Obsolescence

Check out the hanging forest of wheels and tires downstairs for some great deals on the components that fashion forgot, or ask about their backstock bikes. Many are barely a year old.

this is the best bike shop in the city. Not only do they carry small companies products but they offer the best non-snobby customer service in the city. They are always quick to greet you and find out how they can help you. Their prices are reasonable and their mechanics are great. GO to this bike shop even if you dont need anything, its an awesome experience. make sure to look up at some of the classic bikes on the ceiling.
