Editorial Review for Higher Gear – by Elisa Kronish

The Scene
Bikes hang from the walls and ceiling, leaving room for limited selections of accessories and clothes. The small space is kept surprisingly neat and organized, with the service area taking up about half the store.

The Goods
Because of the clientele, the emphasis is on road bikes rather than mountain bikes. It's one of the few stores in the area that sells titanium bicycles by Merlin and aluminum bikes by Danish-based Principia; it's the only Chicago area dealer that sells Seven Cycles, whose bicycles are handcrafted to individual specifications. Other bike brands include Gary Fisher, LeMond, Gunnar and a retro-green mountain bike by Bianchi. Service includes two free bike tune-ups within a year of purchase. Clothing is mostly Pearl Izumi and SheBeest; bike shoes are Sidi and Carnac.

The Extras

Join one of the two weekly rides that leave from the store. The Wednesday 6pm group gets more racers; the Saturday 8am ride is usually more sedate.
