Tips for Sine Qua Non Salons

Hands down one of the best salons in Chicago. I visited Sonia at the Lincoln Park location to update my usual boring look. I've had difficulty finding a salon in Chicago that understood the type of look I was going for. Sonia was professional and easy to connect with, she listened to what I needed and wanted out of my look and made it happen. I highly recommend Sine Qua Non and Sonia!

Sine Qua Non creates an exceptional experience from beginning to end. The online scheduling system makes it very easy to set up your appointment and the staff is always professional and friendly. I've had my hair done twice by Josie in the West Town salon and have left with a great cut and color every time. For someone who has been traumatized by past bad hair experiences at other salons, Sine Qua Non made me comfortable from the beginning and I no longer dread having to make a hair appointment. Each salon's beautiful interior design and Bumble & Bumble products is the icing on the cake and I recommend SQN to anyone and everyone I know.

I love this salon! I visited Kimberly at the Lincoln Park location to take my hair from a platinum blonde to a more antique blonde. I've had difficulty finding a salon in the past and the work she did, the atmosphere at the salon and the level of professionalism was perfect. Kimberly listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that, but better than what I could have imagined. The other stylists were quite friendly and I loved all the local artwork, which I learned Kimberly had actually done! I highly recommend Sine Qua Non and Kimberly!

Bad Service, Bad Attitude. I went to Sine Qua Non after my sister in law had recommended it. I wanted a long bob. Things started off well, until my stylist started washing my hair. There was no hot water. She made an excuse about the hot water tank being empty at the end of the day. Not a big deal, but things got worse.

Yola started cutting my hair and I noticed how she started cutting my hair very short, much shorter than what I had asked for. While cutting the back of my hair, she opened up my smock to cut near my neck, which left a ton of hair down my back and on my shirt. When she was done cutting, she said her next appointment was here and that the assistant would finish. This is my BIGGEST pet peeve, I HATE when the stylist starts with another customer, leaving her first customer to sort the rest of the hair cut out with an assistant.

The assistant started drying my hair, and was very rough with the brush and she kept grabbing my hair - very unpleasant. Her friend showed up and she yelled to her from across the salon "I'll be right there, I just have to finish drying this lady's hair." When she was done, she commented back to the stylist that "I was all hers" and abruptly left with her friend.

The stylist left her customer and came back to me. At this point, I looked in the mirror and was not happy with what I saw. My hair was very flat, there was no texture, and it was much shorter than what I wanted. I commented that I wanted more texture, and she said sarcastically, and not in a funny way, "Oh you don't want a classic bob?" I said no thanks. She added more texture, and my hair looked ok. I wasn't happy with my bangs, so she cut them some more. The cut was ok.

I would not go back to this salon. I don't care if Yola had a bad day. You should not leave your appointment with hair down your back, with a shorter cut than what you asked for (much much shorter), and most importantly totally annoyed.

Jennifer Rocks!. Where do I start? I am SOOO pleased with my FIRST Sine Qua Non experience. I recently moved here from Michigan where the same girl had been doing my hair for 20 years so I was VERY nervous about having to find someone I trusted. I was in desperate need of a haircut and color from one that had definitely run it's course, it had been roughly 5 months!!! I read a few reviews, narrowed it down to 5 places, picked up the phone and decided I would go to the first place that could at least get me in for a consultation-today. I gave the receptionist a brief history, explained my apprehension and made one request: a senior or master stylist, and she set up a consultation with Jennifer. I hung up and instantly felt queasy, I was stepping out of my "comfort zone" ... I showed up about 10 minutes early and was almost immediately introduced to Jennifer. She sat me down, LISTENED to me and offered ideas, and the best part about it was that I was comfortable with her AND she happened to be free for the next 1 1/2 hours! She did an OUTSTANDING job, the color is fabulous, and the cut was exactly what my hair needed, and it just so happens that she does eyebrows too! I can't believe I lucked out on the first try. I think I may have found the girl who will be doing my hair for the next 20 years. Parking was easy, salon was fun & upbeat, staff was friendly, great selection of product, and they give you a "welcome" gift bag with coupons and free samples to boot!!! Thanks again Jennifer! :)

Best place for a great cut!. I went to Jamie at their Lakeview location after getting the WORST hair cut I have EVER had at a totally different salon that I will leave nameless. Well, first off Jamie was very kind, and totally knew what she was doing, she had a great plan on how to fix my hair from its mullet into something more appealing and manageable. Also I gave her free control on how my color should be and the type of cut and I walked out with a stylish, color , highlights, toner and cut that I love! The pros: she was not over booked, major to me, was very interested in my concerns, was well educated and knew exactly how to take my idea and turn it into a masterpiece. She was she was happy, energetic, patient and focused. Cons: none. Usually when I get my hair done it takes a while and I get quite a bit done, and at most places the stylist will complain about how long it will take them to do my hair or get bitchy and rude to me, and Jamie did none of that. She was attentive, through, liked what she was doing, and took great pride in her work. Which is how it should be because lets face it ladies, if I could do it myself I would go buy a box of Revlon, but we go to the pros for their experience and expect the best. You wouldn't preform heart surgery on yourself now would you, you would go to a cardiologist! So with that said I truly recomend Jamie for her experience, hard work, and over all patience and great work!

Curls. My curly hair has always been something I've been scared to cut, due to the fact most stylists do not know how to manage it. I did research on salons in Chicago that specialized with curly hair and kept coming across this one. I called to schedule my appointment two days before New Years Eve and got in NYE afternoon. The person who answered the phone was very polite and asked questions about my hair. I was set up with Kimberly and absolutely love my haircut! I pretty much left it up to her with what she wanted to do and trusted her. I was right in doing so. She cut off over a foot of hair and added bangs which in 28 years is something I've never had. I was very impressed with this salon. Everyone was friendly and the stylists know what they are doing!

Stylist chases client away. Bad experience at the salon. During my haircut with Stevie, while making small talk she asked how I found out about the salon. I mentioned that I found it through CitySearch. Since the salon was so highly rated I decided to try it out. She then proceed to ask where I lived and I told her, which is about 25 min from the salon. Her response was ?You drove all the way over here for a haircut? There isn't someone local you could go to??

Why would you say that to the client in your chair? Pretty smart business technique; chase a client out of your chair and the owner's salon into someone else's.

Good haircut, bad customer service at the front. I love Tracey, she is an awesome stylist. I just moved to Chicago and have lived in NYC for a while. I am glad I found a salon where I can get a good haircut for a very good price. The only complaint I have is the customer service when you call in. They are extremely rude. So be prepared for rude people on the phone, but great service when you go there.
