A special place from my childhood

by grizlee50 at Citysearch

II grew up at Belmont and Damon and I remember feeling like I lived in the best place on earth. I had Phillips bakery across the street and Man-Jo-Vins 1 block away. I remember mom would give me a dollar and I would get a hotdog with mustard, onions, and relish and fries and a small coke for lunch. Everyday. And as I recall, I even got change back from my dollar. Then go down to Marys candy store and buy some penny candy before heading back to Jahn school. Oh, those were the good ol days. I used to go to Felgers park and eat those wonderful greasey fries and fantastic milkshakes. My folks would send me and my brother there to buy supper at least twice a week.My favorite was the double cheeseburger I also loved the Italian beef sandwitches and the tamales. Everything there was just the best. Unfortunately, my folks moved the family to kansas in 1973. I can tell you there is no place like Man-Jo-Vins anywhere in Kansas. I try to tell people about the best food in Chicago, and they don't know what Italian beef is. How about branching out to Kansas? That would be allright with me. Thanks to you Manny, joe, and Vinny for having a dream and making it come true in spades!

Best Fries in the City...

by Stacytwin at Citysearch

I was born in 1953 and I remember when I was about five years old my Dad would take us to ManJoVins. We would get a variety of things from the menu. Mostly I remember the tamales and fries. We would take our bags of steamy hot, greasy, wonderful food and walk over to Hamlin park. We would sit under a tree and enjoy our wonderful food. The hot dogs had that snap and the relish was to die for. Italian sausage was the other favorite of mine. And can we talk about the shakes.... THICK AND CREAMY. ManJoVins was always the place to go for the fries and great, great hot dogs. Everything there was great. Also it holds alot of memories for me and time spent with my Dad. Then even as a grown up when I was having a bad day I would stop by ManJoVins for a bag of fries. Boy that was a great treat. I was able to take my grandson there to and he too enjoyed the hot beef and those tamales. I am so happy that is back and will be going there again! Great food! ManJoVins you are here to stay!!!

Man Jo Vins built by my family in 1953.

by GinnyNuccioLandis at Citysearch

Built in 1953, with all used equipment and no experience by my Dad, Vince and his two brothers Manny and Joe, hence the name Man Jo Vin's. With little money and a dream, Man Jo Vins was born. It started as a hot dog stand where food was served through a window to loyal customers, winters as cold as ice and hot summers. The films of the grand opening of the Damen Ave. store and the little know Laramie store are in the family archives. All the uncles worked at MJV, including Uncle Frank Nuccio who recently passed away. He is loved and sorely missed. Lots of memories for me and my cousins at MJV. My first car was given to me in the parking lot (1961 Chevy, red and white). I am now 60 years old, but always stopped in when i was in Chicago. It made our families and that of the Porter, Nunzio Micelli, very comforable financially. My Dad sold his share in 1968 shortly after my wedding, and moved to Florida. The only day it closed was for funerals of my Grandmother and Grandfather and my wedding with my name on the marquis announcing the big day. What a thrill!!!! I still remember the pans of beef, the hot dogs steaming, the tamales. We now have family reunions and eat the same food now and it is just as delicious. Thanks for keeping MJV alive!!! And the memories for me....

Best italian beef sandwich I have ever had...

by MrMcNerd at Citysearch

I stopped by this cool looking restaurant in Roscoe Village for lunch. The place is brand new and has large booths with plenty of room.

When I got my food I realized that I had found best italian beef I've ever had and served in extremely generous portions. The fries were also tremendously tasty. The chocolate malt was a nice a nice addition to an already great meal. The food, along with the friendly service really had an impact on me, as I went back for dinner!

I am an instant fan of this restaurant and look forward to trying other menu items.

Burger City!

by eghofherr3 at Citysearch

As a family member fondly known as whimpy for my penchant for burgers in leau of continental breakfasts, this joint makes the worlds best burger. At Manjovins they use thin patties but the secret is that they server them with mustard, dill relish, white onions sliced paper thing and grilled@@@!!!!!yummmiee@!, and katchup and cheese! I love this place and spend approx. 20 minutes of my Saturdays getting there for the burgers. A hnuge but worthy sacrifice for the best burgers ever!

  • Pros: Onions, Cheese, Mustard
  • Cons: Unionworkers, wait for each order
