Hair Cuts with an Edge!.
Big Hair is a unique salon where freedom of expression is the norm. Its always a friendly environment, but do not expect the typical posh stylist to greet you. Expect to see pink hair, tatoos, and an alternative atmosphere with a unique environment. I have always gotten excellent hair cuts there with great conversation from the staff.
If you do prefer a certain stylist, sometimes it can be a longer wait since they typically go by "first come first serve" with the next available stylist open to take you, but even with that, they are all good.
Enter if you are looking for something different with your hair cut experience. You wont be dissapointed!
Nice people, fun place, but not the best place to go if you have curly hair!. I don't remember who I had but she was a sweetheart. Everyone in there was really nice. I went with my roommate for a walk-in and neither of us were too happy with our haircuts. My roommate has short straight hair and I have long big frizzy curly hair. The girl kept my hair long like I asked but the top layer was WAY too short and the whole cut was just kind of awkward. Maybe it'll work better for other people. Wasn't terrible... and the price was incredible
this place is a dump. "This place is a DUMP! It looks like a teenager threw-up in it! Yes it has been around for over 20 years and it hasn't been clean for almost 20yrs as well. Here's what you can expect...majority of stylists who know what they are doing but don't have the tools or products to meet your needs. The owner not only believes that everyone and anyone is stealing from her she is always completely understocked and the stylists have to "make do" with what's available. They mix color in hopes of achieving the results you are looking for--mostly a "wing and a prayer" Not only is the salon constantly understocked the owner waters down EVERYTHING from processing solutions, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap to even the hand lotion in the bathroom. She buys all her products from thrift stores, Sally's or Beauty Alliance and only when they are on sale and close to expiration date then doubles or triples the price to sell to her customers. To say this place is a "dump" would be an understatement and truly is a disgrace to the Roscoe Village community. If you dare to go then be sure to give your tip directly to your stylists as the owner routinely cheats her employees out of their due pay."
GO SEE QUEENIE!!!!!. I am that picky girl..the type that knows exactly what she wants and is not afraid to go back if it's not right..on the other hand I am the first person to compliment a job 'well done'..that's why I need to mention Queenie. I have to admit when I walked into Big Hair that I was a little intimidated by the atmosphere..I normally tend to lean towards a salon environment, but TIME CONSTRAINTS and FUNDS the other weekend forced me to grasp at straws and go completely out of the box on a referral from a friend...I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!!! Queenie was awesome-she listened to exactly what I wanted and did it perfectly-keeping me entertained the whole time!! I felt like I knew her forever and didn't feel uncomfortable expressing how I wanted the color to look..The cut is great and my color looks so natural-I have gotten so many compliments and I still can't believe how inexpensive everything was..Big Hair has def got a return customer!
worst hair experience ever, overpriced. I had a fabulous stylist but heard that she left big hair , so I decided to try someone new. First of all, the last time I was there I guess I was too talkative to realize how dirty the place is.. the jars that the combs are kept in are hideous and have things floating in them, not to mention that there is dusty clutter everywhere and I don't even want to start on the bathroom. Second, the stylist I had was on the phone most of the time she was cutting my hair and had no concern for my comfort . If that wasn't enough, her children were at work with her, tugging at her arm and whining while she was actively cutting my hair! I have never been so insulted! She didn't listen to what I wanted at all, but seemed very attentive when it was time to pay.. This place just isn't what it used to be.. they have no right charging people $20 for such unsanitary and unprofessional business practices.. Id pay $5 at the most. Whoever owns this place should sell it to someone who knows how to run a business. Its in a great area, but I'm sure it is the embarrassment of the neighborhood.
Gorgeous hair and make-up for my wedding day!. I got married last weekend and couldn't afford the $200 or higher price tag every other salon was trying to pin on me for hair and makeup. I love Big Hair for my regular hair needs, so I thought I'd just "settle" for a normal hair-do at Big Hair for my big day. Amber did my hair and make-up and I must say that my hair turned out GORGEOUS, and my make-up did, too! I have never felt so beautiful and glamorous and every one of my guests raved about how beautiful I looked, asking for the name of my stylist. Amber and the folks at Big Hair went above and beyond and I couldn't be happier. My mom (who paid) was thrilled, too, that it less was than half the price of everywhere else. Go to Big Hair!
Megan is great!!!. I went in wanting to completely change my hair color. I walked in with black hair and red strands in the front. I showed Megan (the stylist) pictures of the haircut I wanted it and told her that I wanted to change the color to a brown with bleached strands. I told her about my little hair defects, like a colic I have on the top back part of my head. She cut my hair exactly how I wanted it (even better) and cut in a way that the colic worked with my haircut... now the hair standing up naturally looks like it was done on purpose. I've rarely walked out of a salon being 100% satisfied with the whole experience. The color looks great as well... I definitely recommend BIG HAIR... especially MEGAN!!!
Long Waits and Appointment Loophole. I've tried over the past 6 months to visit a specific stylist for a walk-in hair appointment. Since only color can be made by appointment, haircuts must be walkins. On several occassions, I have tried to walkin for a haircut and request a specific stylist, I either had had to wait 2+ hours, or in one case was asked to come back another day. I do not live in the area and have been extremely disappointed with the system they have in place. I'd rather pay a little more for a haircut than waste $$ in gas and time wasted sitting in the waiting area.
Still the great palce I remember!!. I firmly believe that you shouldn't have to mortgage you house to get a great cut and color in Chicago.......apparently this shop believes the same thing. I was getting my hair cut at Big Hair a few years ago but tried someone new when my stylist left. The new shop was okay and reasonable?.but every couple cuts, the person who was doing my hair was gone and I was starting over. When it happened again, I decided to try Big Hair again. When I looked up the number I read a couple of the comments here on City Search. Some of the comments below are tacky and frankly self serving. When I called I specifically asked for Queenie because of some negative comments below?I was pretty sure the comments were out of line. I was right!! I didn?t get exactly what I explained to Queenie?.I got BETTER! Finally I got the top layered exactly the way I wanted. The rest of the cut was just what I wanted?..lots of style and sass. The color turned out much closer to my real ash blonde and Queenie suggested a few highlights that really made it look perfectly natural. I was a little disappointed that the prices have gone up slightly..(thanks idiot who ever you are that said you get what you pay for)..I had always found in the past the quality of hair care given was a lot more then the cost was, it?s still a reasonable price for great hair. If you are looking for a posh salon with rude people that have their noses out of joint this may not be your thing?but if you are looking for a great fun place to get your hair cut, colored or both?.CALL BIG HAIR!!.
I was there when Patti opened it!. I was helping a friend run a vintage retail buisiness a few blocks down Roscoe, when the owner of the store came in with a great hair cut!! He told me it was only $5.00. So I ran down the street during my break and became fast friends with Patti who owend and opened the shop. she colored and cut my hair and I only paid $5.00 so I tipped her $15.00, everytime I get to town I try to hook up with her and have her do something wild an fun!
