In Short
Aimed at all levels of students, this school, which has a sister operation in River North, provides individual and group instruction in salsa, tango, West Coast swing, ballroom and others. In addition to these specialty courses, students can take dance classes to prepare them for occasions such as black-tie parties or weddings. Beginners learn the basics of leading, following, technique and rhythm. After a few months, they can enter dance competitions around Chicago.

I have been attending group classes and taking private lessons at the River North location since May 2007 and have been very impressed with the courses and instructors. The facility is in a good location and street parking isn't usually a problem. The group classes are a great value, especially their unlimited package, which allows you to take any and all group classes for $275 per session. All of the instructors truly want to help you learn and are very willing to take time with you after class to answer questions, recommend the next set of classes to take, etc. In addition to classes, they have parties in their locations relatively frequently, which is a great way to socialize and learn to dance with different partners. I do wish they had a bit more room to work with, and my only suggestion would be to offer more classes in each of the different styles (because I've enjoyed learning so much I know I'm going to want to take more!). For example, there are 8 week swing, tango, and salsa-only classes but no 8-week quickstep-only or rumba-only courses. I'd love to see more specific courses rather than overview courses for those of us that would like to learn the ins and outs of specific dances. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend going to Chicago Dance - Tommye and Gregory have done a fantastic job in recruiting and developing instructors and making the studio a fun and interactive place to learn!

Ok I'll admit, I started dancing because of Dancing With the Stars. I even started at that national chain that they keep advertising on television. But after being unimpressed on their teaching methods (which was teaching the same 3 dances and same moves for 10 straight lessons without progressing) and a horrible 45 second "routine gone wrong", it was time for a change. What did I do? I asked an unlikey source, my (ahem) "ex gf", where she and her parents used to dance and hense I wound up here. Over a year later I'M STILL HERE =)!!! If you want to learn from a place where it's about what YOU want to dance and not about what you "HAVE TO" dance then this IS the the place to learn. On my very first lesson, my instructor asked me "What do YOU want to learn?", not something like, "I'm teaching you 'this & that' and you're gonna learn to like it". Ever since then I was hooked. Fast forward to the present and I'm dancing still dancing away. I don't think if I stayed at that other place I would've gotten anywhere, let alone competing. And what about Tommye & Gregory? Yes, they are REAL former World Champions and would gladly show you how good you can potentially become. I can honestly say, everytime I see them dance (whether on PBS, live at Chicago Dance Festival in Grant Park, or just in the studio) I'm totally blown away; almost as if they can step on any dancefloor and wow the crowd without rehearsing. I started dancing as an "experiment", now it's part of my life. I'm glad I made the switch and the results show. This IS where Chicago learns to dance, no doubt about it =)
