Editorial Review for Hamlin Park – by Colin Murphy

The Scene
This full-service park has a quartet of well-lit ball fields, outdoor basketball courts, a large playground, a field house and swimming pool (open July-Sept.), tennis courts and a sizable dog-friendly area. The park has a lively, family friendly atmosphere, with people from the neighborhood and beyond coming to play, run their dogs, or just sit and read.

The Draw
Wrapping around the tennis courts on two sides is the fenced dog park, with a soft gravel surface and two double-gated entrances. In summer and fall, the baseball diamonds fill up with little league and softball games, and summer camps make extensive use of the facilities too. The field house hosts a number of athletic and community programs, including a boxing club that regularly produces Golden Gloves contenders.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

People often bring lawn chairs to make up for the lack of seating in the dog run. If you plan on staying for a while, you might consider bringing a chair of your own.

There is a dog park here and four softball diamonds. You can take your dog (bring baggies) to play with other friendly dogs, then stroll through the park and observe the talent of the Chicago pee wees. Sounds of laughter and cheering blow through the air. One minor warning: the dog park is muddy.
