The not so secret menu is worth ordering from. Byob makes it a worthy place to come for a night's meal.
Spoon Thai, on Western Ave.. Somewhat authentic Thai from what I can tell. But these people need to seriously change the cooking oil in their deep fryer. And a bit pricey considering the portions. I gave them a chance but was pretty disappointed on both visits.
If you're looking for the real thing, this is not it.. The place is clean and you can bring your own drink. Very cool! However, Thai food is know for a lot of different sweet and sour sauces/curries. All the dishes I tried were a lot more sweet, than a good combination of the both. I will keep on searching for the real thing.
Nice Emplyees , Crappy Food.
This place got so many kudos , but to be honest this place sucked . I went there tonight for the first
time because it was recommended , but I am sad to have spent $40 . I would say Penny's Noodle
beats this place by far ! Very nice employees , BAD FOOD !!!
Gett'n freaky and eat'n good. Food was excellent. BYOB is always a plus. We were seated promptly. So.So service. Light music. Nice variety on the menu. Ok for kids.
Spicy, Tasty, and Adventurous. Best Thai I've found since moving back to the City. Very authentic; many unusual dishes and most very good. Also, if you like spice, you don't have to beg here to give you a spicy dish. Did have one dish I wouldn't recommend -- the whole fish. Otherwise, be adventurous and enjoy. BYOB.
Excellent Thai food served in a smallish BYOB spot on busy Western Avenue..
In Short
While Spoon Thai does a great deal of takeout and delivery, the atmosphere is pleasant for dine-in. Stick to Thai specialties for a first-class meal. Top appetizers include shrimp in a blanket--plump, skewered shrimp wrapped in won ton skins and deep-fried--and satay chicken served with peanut sauce and cucumber salad. Pad thai is on the mild side, but can be made spicier. Curry dishes with vegetables, chicken and beef are also favorites.
Mushy fried rice!. My friend and I decided to try a new thai place, and were extremely disapponted in Thai Spoon. The overpriced eggrolls looked like mini appetizers-- really small. The chicken fried rice I ordered was so mushy, with boiled chicken and no vegetables. I had 3 bites and took it out to the dumpster. The meal which consisted of fried rice and eggrolls was just under 20 bucks!! And the woman behind the counter was mean. I should call and complain, but instead of a just getting a credit at some place I would never eat at again, I decided to tell Chicagoland about it.
Great Thai food a little out of the way. We had to take two trains to get here, but it was well worth it. The Thai food was out of this world. I had fried tofu appetizer with side of sweet and sour peanut sauce and wife had shrimp egg rolls. For mains, I had red curry, just the right spice. Wife had Yum Woonsen salad, which was a tad too spicey for her. I helped her with it, and it was awesome, a little hot, but didn't cause me to break out into a sweat. Make the trip out to this place, simply great Thai food!
