A huge part of what makes Reckless Records a unique store is what you bring through the door to sell or trade. If you want to get some new music or new movies, and you don't want to spend much money, then bring in your old CDs, DVDs, videos, video games, records, 45s. We will even find a home for your humble cassette tapes (we consider most music-related items). If you just want some quick cash, great, bring them in. We do, however, offer 20% more in trade than we do in cash. For instance, if we offer you $10 cash for an item, that will be $12 in trade, and so on.

If you have a huge collection you are interested in parting with it, but it's going to be too large to bring to one of our locations, let us know--call or e-mail. We may be able to save you the journey by sending out a couple of our expert staff to have a look and make an offer.

In Short
This Wicker Park location covers the underground bases well, particularly local independent releases (Drag City, Touch and Go, Frisbie, Pinebender). The genre-organized stock of new CDs and vinyl is also impressive. Psychedelic and prog rock (staff favorites), punk and garage, soul, jazz, and experimental are in good supply, with smatterings of world, techno and lounge as well. Mags, zines, and new and used videotapes and DVDs are also available.

Although you can still find good music at Reckless, their selection has declined over the past few years, and its become more and more frustrating to have to wade through stacks of years-old used CDs that nobody wants. Their new release wall always feels a little bare too. They're still probably the best at what they do in Chicago, but that's kind of faint praise these days.

Reckless is a good egg. What would Chicago do without Reckless Records? However, I do want to stress how perusing the racks in a hungover state is a very bad idea indeed. I almost passed out sifting through all those sleeves. Just a warning.

Everyone always says that the employees here are so intimidating, but I think it's because they really just don't know much about the stock. Every time I've asked them a question I'm greeted by a totally blank stare. Nevertheless, the selection is pretty good and probably the best in Chicago if you're into indie rock. I do wish it were a little better organized. Don't expect any help finding anything, even obvious stuff like the latest Pavement reissue. One more gripe: the counters are unnecessarily high--I always feel like I have to stand on my tiptoes to sign a receipt.
