Uncle Julio's is the McDonald's of Mexican food, but every once in a while, you just crave a Big Mac, or in this case, an enchilada dinner.
Mexican vs Tex-mex. I am very picky about Mexican food. I don't particularly like tex-mex food which to me is a slight downgrade of Mexican food if compared due to the replacement of some mexican ingredients with american ingredients some of wich I wouldn't even use on mexican food like cheddar or monterey jack. The mexican food they do have is good though.
Festive atmosphere and Mexican fare make this casual chain a favorite for families and young professionals..
In Short
The bright, spacious room is all greens, reds and yellows, with painted terra-cotta walls covered with an assortment of tchotchkes. The menu features plates of chicken tamales, enchiladas with sour cream sauce, and jumbo shrimp stuffed with Jack cheese and jalapenos, wrapped in bacon and grilled. Desserts include the cajeta: a large ball of vanilla ice cream rolled in toasted coconut and pecans.
Not worth the wait.....
I just don't understand how this place gets good ratings. With authentic Mexcian places close by (Lalo's, El Cid, La Canasta) at far better prices, it's surprising that this is rated so high. Went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, waited 20 minutes when it wasn't busy. The service was poor at best and the food was expensive and terrible. It tasted like we were at chichi's or pepe's.
Stay away if you actually know good Mexican food.
THE BEST MARGARITAS. Uncle Julio's Hacienda is the best place in Chicago to get a margarita on the rocks or any margarita for that matter. Take it from a former bartender. The steak fajitas (Medium Rare) make my mouth water when I think about them. This is the best place to bring an out-of-towner or just to get a great mexican meal
it's grrrreat!!!. this place is a good eat, and the bathrooms are clean, always a good sign! Their margaritas are the best i've had in a long time(try the swirl one), and they have endless combos of foods to try. It gets busy, but it's worth the wait.
GO FOR THE DRINKS. The food is awesome, if a bit pricey, but you get a ton. Both the frozen sangria & the margaritas are incredible, but their signature drink, The Swirl, combines the two. They're tasty, and although they're about $8 each, they're quite potent. If you like margaritas, give it a try.
Watered Down Drinks. As far as the food, it's okay. The price is right. The drinks are very much watered down. They are nothing like the "margs" at Blue Agave.
margarita. Arrived with a rather large group so the wait stunk (not their fault). Fortunately, they have some might fine beverages to guzzle down as you await your table. Love the frozen margarita, and the sangria is good as well. Overall the experience was good it just took 3+ hours to get in and out. But hey, I would go back again.
fake mexican. If you think it is important to go to a crowded restaurant, then this is the place for you. If you wan't to over pay for every meal this is also the place for you.
