Editorial Review for Louie's Pub – by John Dugan
The Scene
Louie's Pub is a welcoming, old-school neighborhood bar, consistently popular with a diverse set of younger folks. On any night of the week, there are regular guys, ties loosened, and an equal number of 20-something ladies comparing notes. Louie's has plenty of bottled beers--domestics suit the clientele fine--and Miller Lite on tap. Keeping up with the trends, Louie's has a specialty martini menu. The narrow front barroom opens into an area where stools are cleared out for karaoke performances. Silhouettes of the Beatles, Sinatra and Hendrix adorn the walls. The back room has a pool table and video games.
The Karaoke
On Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays, karaoke takes over and the half-dozen monitors display the lyrics to well-worn pop tunes. Get on the list, pick a tune (R.E.M., Zeppelin, Tina Turner) and show your friends your hidden talent. Live bands sometimes play on weekends.

Ever since I first moved to Chicago, I've been frequenting what I at first thought was just a hole in the wall. The jovial atmosphere and wide range of singing talent never ceases to amuse. It is pretty crowded on weekends, understandably, but if you're patient (and friendly helps) you'll get to sing your song--as long as you submit it early enough. For the karaoke shy, come on a Tuesday or Wednesday and sing for an intimate friendly crowd that is always sure to applaud.
Pros: Happy, Fun songs, Singing DJs
Cons: Crowded on weekends

They've got a new karaoke player. There are about 2500 songs to choose from. They have 3 wireless microphones which is a great plus. Excellent selection of songs. You can walk around the bar or dance as you sing. There are also new plasma televisions to watch your favorite sports teams. You can sing a lot on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sunday and early Friday or Saturday starting at 9pm sharp. After midnight on Saturday you will likely sing if you attach a tip with each request...because if you don't someone else will! On weekends money talks. There is no food available there except popcorn. So, eat somewhere else first. You will see some funny and interesting characters singing there. And, you can use the small dance floor to dance around with your friends as you sing. You can also sing at your table with the three available wireless microphones.
Pros: Karaoke friendly, affordable, jovial atmosphere
Cons: who sings when, no food
