“This bar is great, very laid back and you never have to wait for a beer.”
“Friendly, attentive barkeepers, good prices and one of the best jukeboxes in the city.”
“.. If your not a so called REGULAR dont bother not worth your time to stop in for a so called cold beer.”
The last of the great neighborhood bars.. In a neighborhood that has essentially become "Lil' Lincoln Park", it's heartening to see the Gold Star holding its own. For longtime residents of Wicker Park/West Town, the Gold Star has always been a truly neighborhood bar. City workers, artists, sport fans and the great unwashed have always mingled peacefully here and it is my sincere hope that that continues to happen as the streets outside get gobbled up by greedy developers. Friendly, attentive barkeepers, good prices and one of the best jukeboxes in the city. Leave your credit cards and snotty attitude at the door, please.
What a Joke. They say they have been open for 20 plus years seems like 20 mins on my estimation .. If your not a so called REGULAR dont bother not worth your time to stop in for a so called cold beer.. Your time is good elswhere
Division Street watering hole with proletarian appeal to spare..
The Scene
As slick sushi bars and trendy night spots push into Ukrainian Village, the Gold Star's an unabashed workingman's bar from old Chicago. Now a low-rent, hip hangout for area residents (though the walls have been painted white and red), it's still comfortably divey.
The Draw
The dress-down generation's bike messengers, art school grads and 9-to-5ers mix it up here, occupying all the green plastic lawn chairs at the '50s diner tables on a given Friday night. Football posters welcome Green Bay Packers fans who frequent the bar. Stay awhile for a shot at the pool table in the back. The CD jukebox is stocked with Thin Lizzy, MC5, T. Rex and Chicago heavies like the Jesus Lizard. Bottled beer seems appropriate, but the Stella Artois tap's very popular, too.
Be yourself. Grab a seat, talk to a stranger, be yourself. This bar is great, very laid back and you never have to wait for a beer. Show up in your new duds or put on your pajamas and head on in.
need a drink?. I went to this bar to have a couple of drinks with some friends and I have to say...I was impressed. It is a simple bar with outstanding service. I figured the bar wouldn't be anything out the ordinary, like any other bar, but I have to tell you the bartender Mark really makes this place stand out. He is probably one of the best bartenders in the city. You never seem to have to wait for a drink..he is really on top of things. Most bars you have to wait a long time to get the bartenders to serve you on a weekend night but not here. I will definitly come back to this bar.
