Editorial Review for Crobar – by John Dugan

The Scene
Trusted names in entertainment stay fresh, so the club's latest renovations melds bright South Beach colors (pink and blue lighting) with industrial chic. The long entryway's glazed subway tile complements the upper deck's exposed-stud walls, glass and aluminum railings, and rock-retaining walls. The upper level winds around from the main DJ booth to a large glass-enclosed VIP area. Complete with its own DJ booth, two bars, bathrooms, white tables and gray banquettes, "the Suite" serves special clientele in style.

The Draw

Youth, fashion and aggressive partying have returned. Sonically, techno rules the mirror-balled main room. Professional dancers on platforms above the floor and front bar energize the party. Though mixed drinks can be lightweight and beers pricey, Crobar's vibe and service are upbeat--and its gender mix favorable. Once inside, "the Suite," bottles of Veuve Cliquot and Grey Goose prevail with VIP vixens and their admirers.

Insider Tips

When to Go

DJs Psycho Bitch and Teri Bristol reign Saturdays; Felix Da Housecat spins more adventurous electro-clash and new disco the first Friday of every month. Special guests like Timo Maas attract their own share of clubbers. Sunday's "Glee Club" gay night is an institution.

Where to Sit

VIP-room access is worth attempting, but regulars and celebrities get priority (though the space can be reserved for private parties). Reservations are taken for main room tables.

Patterns of discrimination still exist the nightclub Crobar put this in full effect this friday. The nightclubs Crobar set quotas for the number of blacks allowed inside and selectively use dress codes to enforce that. My friend that is white was throwing a birthday party at Crobar all his white friends where allow entry but all his blacks friends including I wasnt. We asked why and the bourncer gave each one of us a bogus answer. It was a special model night and as well as us some black model where denied entry, asked bouncer why and told them they were wearing the wrong ear rings.

This is without a doubt the best club on Saturday night. If you like bangin' electo house music then this is the place to be. Mixin Marc is on the decks throwing down every Saturday with Nathan Scott in the Suite. DJs from all over the world come to Crobar to spin when they come to Chicago, like Rogen Sanchez, Erick Morillo, DeadMau5, Robbie Rivera, and more. If you're looking for the best clubbing experience in Chicago this is it.
