Editorial Review for Salamander of Chicago – by Elisa Kronish
The Scene
A recent interior renovation gave this formerly dowdy store a much-needed update, with fancy light fixtures and light wood shelving. Although it's a chain across Europe, Salamander is only in three U.S. cities--Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Salespeople don't work on commission, so the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
The Goods
About 85 percent of the shoes are made in Germany, with others from Austria, Spain, Portugal and Italy--don't be shy about asking for translation of sizes and description tags. Widths typically start at B and go up to EEE, giving wide-footed customers a good fit from European designers including Romika, Rieker, Portania, Peter Kiser and Salamander's own line. Like everyone's favorite Birkenstocks (sold here), form often follows function in German-made shoes. A good selection of kids' shoes is just as focused on comfort (mini-Birks are too cute).

Insider Tips
Fit for a ChildIf your child isn't patient enough for shoe shopping, take a print of his foot, and Salamander will send you a pair of shoes to fit.
Gotta Go?Customers travel from as far away as Ohio to get their fashionable wide shoes. If you've come a long way, baby, you can relax: Salamander has a public restroom, built especially with long trekkers in mind.
