What Our Expert Scouts Say

San Soo Gab San

You might have to let your eyes adjust through the haze of this Korean BBQ favorite, but once they do, you will be happy to have found your way to a wooden booth. A parade of colorful banchan will appear before you, and then it's time to choose, grill and devour your meat.

Prepare to get smoky. This Korean BBQ place reminds me of my time traveling to Korea. Good food, large portions & lots of sides.

Okay Korean Food. The food here was good, but not as great as some of my friends have commented about. The seafood pancake was good as well as the many little appetizers, though other places give those appetizers out also. Overall, was an okay Korean BBQ place.

Yummy, so Stop Complaining. Sure, the service was a bit slow and no nonsense, but the food was very yummy. My friend and I enjoyed some soon dooboo chigae (seafood tofu soup), boolgoki (marinated grilled beef off the bone) and the always delicious haemool pahjun (seafood pancake). For those of you who are seeking uber-friendly caricatures of other cultures, go to Disneyland. If you want excellent Korean food served by sufficiently polite staff, go to San Soo Gap San.

Very Good Korean BBQ in Chicago. Great food, and very good service for the type of place. I go back about once every 2 weeks and have never been disappointed. The meat is flavorful and plentiful. The side are also well executed and they will happily refill your favorites upon request. The 24 hour bit is also fantastic.

Solid Korean BBQ Experience. Some folks have mentioned poor service. Maybe our timing was good. We went with a party of 4 on a Sunday around 12:30 PM. We were seating quickly and the staff was very attentive and helpful. The food was solid. The BulKoKi was very good. The marinated spicy chicken was good, and the pork varient of the same was excellent! Personally, I was a bit disappointed in the beef Kalbi, but it was still a good dish. There were more side dishes provided than I could count. All four of us left stuffed and very pleased with the experience. I am certain we will go again.

favorite midnight snack. So for those of you who are quick to judge this place need to lose your demanding attitudes or become more patient. I am a frequent customer of San Soo Gap San, they always welcome me cordially and give me a heads up on what dishes i should get and the ones i should skip. Most of the wait staff have a great sense of humor and are fun to chat with when they make their rounds. I often get Bulgoki and Baby Octopus which are always delicious no matter what time of day i choose to visit.

Poor Service! Never go back again!. The service SUCKED!! The way the waitress talked and the attitude she showed were arrogent. While taking our order, she seemed inpatient. I observed the lousy service was given to all customers.

Each side dish CHARGED ONE DOLLAR. I went to many other Korean restaurants. Side dishes are free. I WILL NOT GO BACK again to be humiliated.

Great Sushi!!!. This place has some of the best sushi around this neighborhood. It is fresh, and they only use the best cuts (which I find refreshing). The Bulgogi is so excellent, and when I mentioned to the waitress that I've never eaten Korean BBQ before, she sat down at my table and showed me how to do everything! She was very helpful, and actually, quite funny too! My husband had the sirloin tip (BBQ), and he loved that as well. The prices are very affordable, and you could feed an army with 2 entrees. I recommend this restaurant with 2 thumbs up! Hey, I'm going there again tonight!!! Yay!

Great food worth so so service. I loved my first experience at a korean bbq. It was not hard to choose a dish since the menus are very self explanatory. I tried the chicken, pork, ribs, and the marinated steak. YUMMY it was all great. I had heard the serviced was not good but I had an attentive waitress. She was not very friendly but she sat us immediately and served us promptly. No complaints here. Not really knowing what all the little dishes were was fun and added to the expierience.

I disagree with the comments.... Know what you are want...helps getting the service you need at this place (it's a no frill place for sure). If not, let the waitress know you are virgin, they will be more than happy to help.

Easiest way to order is just tell the waitress you want one order of "Kalbi" and one order of "Bulgogi" (enough for 3), and you'll be set.

On a side note, get a bottle of Soju(korean rice wine) and couple bottles of OB or Hite beer, you'll be in for one heck of an awesome meal.

Btw, they open 24/7, perfect for those 4am afterparty munchiees(sp?).

THE SERVICE HERE SUX!. The service here is atrocious, even by the poor standards of your typical Korean restaurant. Stay away!
