Editorial Review for Griffins & Gargoyles – by Elisa Kronish
The Scene
Father and daughter Roy and Kelly Donovan opened their store in 1975 in an old dairy warehouse, now adorned with green window awnings, antique iron fencing and a driveway laid with cobblestone and old Chicago-street brick pavers. In addition to the merchandise, Kelly's personal collection of children's rocking toys--from the turn of the century through the 1920s--creates an appealing atmosphere.
The Goods
Two floors are packed--but not cluttered--with mostly pine armoires, dressers, bedside tables, trunks and a few dining tables. Pieces are hand-selected from Belgium, France, Germany, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, and prices are surprisingly reasonable. Finds may include a two-door armoire from Belgium circa 1860 and a painted dresser from Hungary. Filling the dusty gaps are accessories like bed boards from Switzerland and a hat tree from the former Czechoslovakia. Restoration and finishing are done in-house.
