Chicago >Black Ensemble Theatre
The brainchild of Chicagoan Jackie Taylor has been going strong for over a quarter century..
The 144-seat theater with proscenium stage provides excellent sight lines for the Company's musicals, known for their infectious energies and melodies. Tuck yourself into one the front row seats, and you may find yourself doing the roach or the funky chicken along with cast members performing in musicals such as "The Jackie Wilson Story" or Company mainstay "The Other Cinderella," performed every other year.
Presenting an average of five plays with open runs and more than 100 rotating artists annually and attracting some 30,000 visitors, the Black Ensemble Theatre Company employs vibrant musical theater to showcase the lives of legendary African Americans. Dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham and pioneer Broadway producer and playwright Lorraine Hansberry are only a couple of the major figures honored on the Company's stage.
