In Short
Not much has changed here since Top-Notch opened in 1942: wood-paneled walls, seating at booths and tables, and a bar/counter that faces the kitchen. Burgers star on the menu, from the basic "beefburger" in quarter-, half- and three-quarter-pound varieties to specialty burgers like the Western (cheese, bacon, grilled green pepper, barbecue sauce) and the Mexican (jalapeno-jack cheese, salsa, guacamole, green pepper). Other offerings include fries, pork chops, salads, shakes and malts.

This place hamburgers are so damn good that I didn't even have to put ketchup and mustard on it to give it flavor. I asked the owner what does he put on the burgers to make them taste so good and he said it was just that he uses fresh meat. WOW! The only seasoning he adds to the meat is salt. His burgers taste better than most steaks that I have eaten. Normally burgers will upset my stomach but that wasn't the case with these burgers. Actually, calling this is a "burger" is an insult. I ordered the 1/3 King Cheese Burger with Fries and a Chocolate shake. The fries tasted very fresh. Crunchy on the outside and hot and fresh on the inside. The shake was thick and delicious. We also tried the Beef Noodle Soup and they put ground beef in the soup and it was delicious. I wish I had ordered a bowl instead of a cup. My girlfriend had the Rueben Melt and it was delicious. My only complaint is that one of the waitresses left early so the service got slow while we were waiting for our check. This place is by far the best burger place in Chicago. I have also had their breakfast special and the eggs, hashbrown and pancakes were delicious. This guy knows how to make delicious meals. I look forward to bringing my brother's kids there so that they can taste Chicago's Best Hamburgers.
Pros: Hamburgers, Pancakes, Shakes, French Fries, the food
Cons: Parking and can get pretty crowded during lunch time.

The burgers are really good. If you don't eat beef, then try the turkey burgers. Shakes are delicious and the prices can't be beat. The kids' menu is particularly nice if you have children (think, good food for not much more than McDonald's).
