Average at Best. Mac Arthur's used to be a very good soul food experience when they first opened. They were located on the opposite side of the street. This is where I used to go every Sunday morning. Now it is so commercialized. The food on the weekends is not that go because of the crowd and they make so much in bulk, the taste is just average. On the weekdays, the food is pretty good. Their banana pudding still gets me week in the knees and their smothered pork chops are still good but their greens and macaroni and cheese are very average. I know I make better dishes at home. Edna's on Chicago Ave and Kedzie is very delicious....
Soul Food Queen of Chicago. MacArthur's is very popular and seems to be the most crowded on the weekends (especially Sundays). Sometimes, due to the overwhelming amount of people, you may be in a line and face a small wait...but it is all worth it when you see the plethora of food ranging from variety of meats, sides, and de-lish desserts.
Horrible. I have a tendency to not eat in the street what I can effectively cook at home better. I had heard about MacArthurs from my students who are from the west side and after homecoming decided to stop by with a friend. This food was horrible. The fried chicken which appeared to be the safest entree is what I had for dinner. It was edible, but the greens and what they were passing off as mac and cheese left little to be desired. I make better peach cobbler at home...
Not tasty at all. There's nothing I like about the restaurant. The meats aren't seasoned well, and the greens taste exactly like can greens. There's nothing wrong with can greens but if you going to fix them try seasoning it more. I think everyone it's mac arthur just b/c the name is popular. When I was younger I enjoyed the food but now it's not worth my time nor money. Try Alice's on division & long. Or better yet I highly recommend Priscilla's soul food on roosevelt right of mannheim road.
SOUL FOOD AT ITS FINEST. MacArthur's and I go back a decade and it has been quite a love affair. From the smothered pork chops to the ribs and on to the wonderfully tasty and addictive collard greens and corn bread...this place has it all. Did I mention the best homemade mac and cheese? Cannot forget that mainstay. The place is clean and delightful and the owner is a very kind, special and gracious host. Black, white (like me), brown or yellow - if you like quality food, MacArthur's is the place to be!
Best Food Ever. MacArthurs has the best soul food in Chicago and anyone that disagrees is a HATER! The staff is great, the environment is clean and professional! From the chicken to the ribs every item is up to par!!
Great Mac and cheese. I like some of the food. it all depends on when you go. the mac and cheese, greens, shortribs and smothered pork chops is off the chain and the shortribs are to die for. the parking is very bad because they are on a busy street and right next to a huge building. sometimes the staff can be silly. they have no manners and could care less. they just want you out of there. but overall, the food over rules their attitudes. the food us fres and very tasteful.
Solid soul food, great prices, friendly service, pre-United Center meal?. Well, it all started with a lunch date with my friend Anh. Originally, I was feeling the Mexican craving, but I decided to do a quick little search on Metromix and Citysearch, and sure enough, I happened upon the highly rated Soul Food restaurant, MacArthur's on Madison. I had quite a bit of traffic to deal with on my way to Anh's (UIC campus), and MacArthur's was another 3800 West of Ashland (1600 W). I also didn't know if this was going to be a small place, a hole in the wall, or a full fledged restaurant (I know, I should have just looked at the website pictures.) Anyways, to my delight, parking was ample (we had a late lunch at 2:30pm), and there was no one in line. I stepped right up, ordered the baked catfish (the only non-meat entree), and completed the meal with mac n'cheese and yams. All for about $9.00, the food was delicious. A bit greasy, a tad oily, but the flavors of all three items were outstanding. And it's comfort food, so shouldn't you expect a little grease and oil? The restaurant itself was clean, spacious, and had a nice outdoor patio (though we had to move inside due to construction). Service was friendly, and I will definitely be returning. I hate to let the cat out of the bag, and maybe I'm the last to think of this, but MacArthur's seems like the ideal pre-United Center destination. See you there!
Great Food.
Delicious Food
I am a true southern lady and the first time I ate at MacArthur's, I was truly delighted with the service and the taste of the food. It is simply delicious. To the person from New Orleans, everybody doesn't like spicy foods and there are other great cooks besides the people of New Orleans. I have been back to Chicago several times and I still enjoy the food.
It's Okay, but not all that.. Hey, I live around the corner from the resturant and the food is okay. It's average tasting food. My grandmother, who is a great cook in the soul food department, doesn't like the food. My grandma said she could make it herself and make it taste better. I'm a full-time student and also work full-time. I'm just lazy to go and cook it myself. The food is (most of the time) seasonless. The customer service are mean. The most ghettoist people you ever meet in your whole life. About 30% of the time they screw my orders up. There's allways a line. They have an ATM in the middle of the line, which is not smart.
