Editorial Review for MacArthur's – by John Dugan
The Scene
MacArthur's Southern cooking is a neighborhood secret that just about all of South Austin seems to be in on. Massive lines form during the dinner and post-church rush, but most customers get takeout, leaving plenty of tables and booths in the expansive restaurant's green-walled dining rooms.
The Food
A main dish, two sides and cornbread are included in the package deal. Hot entrees rotate daily, with Cornish hens, pork chops, turkey legs and fried catfish making frequent appearances. Fried chicken is always in demand: crispy, juicy, and top-notch. Two thick slices of moist meatloaf pick up the flavor of their tomato sauce. Choose from nearly 20 sides like black-eyed peas, collard greens and super-sweet candied yams, but don't you dare pass up the heavy-duty mac and cheese or the corn-meal based, gravy-slathered homemade dressing.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThere's no alcohol available here, just soft drinks, tea, coffee, bottled water and juices.
When to GoTry MacArthur's for a weekday lunch as Sunday and evening visits almost guarantee a 20-minute plus wait.
ParkingMacArthur's has its own lot reserved for customers; look for it next to the building with the black awning. When that fills up, opt for the lot across the street next to the brown awning of the restaurant's former location.

I like some of the food. it all depends on when you go. the mac and cheese, greens, shortribs and smothered pork chops is off the chain and the shortribs are to die for. the parking is very bad because they are on a busy street and right next to a huge building. sometimes the staff can be silly. they have no manners and could care less. they just want you out of there. but overall, the food over rules their attitudes. the food us fres and very tasteful.
Pros: you're sure to be full
Cons: parking is a mess
