Editorial Review for Susan Kimmelman Off-Leash Dog Beach (Montrose Dog Beach) – by Colin Murphy
The Experience
After years of effort by community activists, the city designated the northwestern end of Montrose Beach a year-round dog-friendly area in late 2002. Unlike the harbor-protected dog beach to the south, this one is washed constantly by waves off the lake, making for some occasional rough waters but keeping things clean. The shallows are great for cooling off, and good swimmers can get a workout in the waves. Montrose beach field house offers bathrooms and concessions.
The Appeal
Even on weekdays, the beach attracts dozens of dogs, with their humans obediently pitching balls into the waves for retrieval or overseeing the big group sniffs that inevitably develop. With a football field's worth of sand, there's plenty of room for everybody, though it gets as crowded as any popular beach on sunny weekends. As in all the city's dog-friendly areas, owners must come equipped to take care of Spot's business.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThough it's fenced from the bank to the waterline from the human beach to the east, the rear of the beach isn't completely surrounded by the tall fencing other dog parks offer. The lure of the water and scores of other dogs are probably enough to keep all but the most hardened escape artists interested, but owners should be aware nonetheless.
