Blast from the past -- for real. Margies is a charming gem of a retro ice-cream/sweet shop. I'm not talking 'faux-retro,' either. This place looks late-50's, early 60's and has the original booth-juke boxes with hits by Perry Como and his ilk.

People expecting sterile, shiny surfaces and well-lit, mass-produced kitsch needn't bother.

People who need to be fawned over needn't bother; this place is the guy's home, and he acts accordingly -- reads his paper -- finishes his sentence, THEN looks up to see what you need.

This is the genuine article for people who are discerning enough to know what a treasure this place is. Go now before it's too late.

Great place to go when you are feeling blue -- soothing and fun. Oodles of hot fudge don't hurt either.

It's in the Logan Square area, which is very safe, despite what the rather highstrung surburbanites have been saying about it.

Homemade Rudeness. I recently went to Margies with a couple of my friends. We haven't been there in quite some time and thought that it would be a great idea to visit. BIG MISTAKE! The services was terrible. They ignored us and the door for about 5 minutes, then they asked us very rudely what we wanted. They didn't even ask if we were waiting to be seated. To make things short , we got our order to go and we said "thank you" and they said "okay". I mean how about "YOU're WELCOME, THANK YOU FOR KEEPING US AROUND FOR THIS LONG!" Never will I ever step into that place, either way Chicago has other ice cream parlor that are yummy and have friendly faces. Good ice cream does not account for TERRIBLE SERVICE.

Margies.....Where have you gone..... This place used to be awesome! Used to be is the key phrase... The Ice Cream tastes too Icey and not Creamy enough(I think they switched to cheaper Cream) The servers are rude grumpy and as slow as they want to be... The Hot fudge is the only thing they can still get right and if you wait for it on a sundae most likey your ice cream will be melted and you trip will already have been ruined my the waiter or waitress helping you. The Candies part of the name is the only thing they deserve to keep this is not the margies of old...One and a hald thumbs down! Oh yeah the neighborhood has gone to the dogs and I dont need to get shot for some Ice Cream...

Get The Ice Cream To Go. For a long time, I went to Margies on a daily basis. The problem is that the service is horrendous. I would go there more often if I could say I've ever had good service there. During summer nights, you'll have to wait too long to sit down to a 5 dollar sundae unless you think vanilla with whip cream and candy stuck on top is worth half an hour. The servers are consistently rude. On one occasion, we wanted an extra spoon to share a banana split and the waitress refused to give us one even though we kept saying we understood there was an additional charge. I have also never been able to get a second cup of water without physically flagging down the servers. And honestly, the ice cream itself tastes generic. You pay for the candy they put on top.

This authentic ice cream parlor and candy shop's biggest draw is its old-fashioned novelty.. The Scene
Like an old grandma's house: Framed needlepoint adorns the walls, while a menagerie of dolls, faded photos (one of the shop from 1939) and other memorabilia cram shelves and display cases. With its old-fashioned charm, the shop has become a fixture on Western Avenue for generations of ice cream lovers for more than 80 years.

The Food
Homemade scoops are heaped into clamshell-shaped bowls and topped with wafer cookies. Root beer floats overflow tall glasses. The signature turtle sundae tops vanilla ice cream with nuts and hot caramel, accompanied by a pitcher of bittersweet hot fudge that's so thick it clumps (sold by the jar, too). Jumbo creations include the Eiffel Tower, with "four scoops of fresh flavors and paradise"; Margie's Melody, combining ice cream and marshmallow; and the "World's Largest Sundae," which dares you to finish a half gallon.

The neighborhood is fine.. "Street people"? Does that mean people hanging out on the street? In the city, in August, everyone is hanging out on the street. Walking around. Because it's nice out. Because they don't have to DRIVE everywhere the way you do in the suburbs.

I can't believe someone would call the neighborhood that Margie's is in "creepy" (check your spelling, by the way. Margie's is in one of the most family-oriented neighborhoods LEFT in the city.

Margie's is a jewel. The service is so-so, but who's there for the service? I'm there for the STELLAR ice cream (forget oberweis and haagen dazs) and I just take it to go.

I'm still not sure who the last reviewer meant by "street people," but I'm appalled by the remark.

BAD Neighborhood/OLD Seats!. Good news - we arrived home in one piece and our car wasn't towed! Margies dates back to 1935 at least, according to their memorabilia. Unfortunately, the store features some very old "aromas" - it doesn't have a clean, fresh restaurant smell. The friendly staff goes out of their way to remind you that your car will be towed out of any adjacent lot and to find metered parking. But metered parking is on streets that feature a LOT of abandoned cars and street people - I'm not exaggerating.

Margies was filled with Mom's with kids. The ice cream treats were very good, but I can only recommend Margie's for "urban explorer" types.

Therefore, I rate Margie's a "Creapy Treat".

Mmmm........ I went to Margies for the first time and I loved it. Ever since then thats the only place i can go to eat delicious Ice-cream. The food is delicious but their deserts are even better......I highly recommend the Banana Nut Sundae, that was the first thing I picked out of the menu and thats what I have been ordering every time I go back

Great ice cream-Lousy service. The sundaes are great-served in unusual scalloped/seashell dishes. Unfortunately, the service borders on rude and it takes forever just to get seated. The host-owner?- couldnt seem to be concerned about it. The layout is irregular and too much space in taken up by the candy counter in the middle. The candies are good too but they can't be bothered by serving you-was there during the daytime when it was slow and they want you to buy an already packed box. Great atmosphere can't make up for poor attitude and slow service.

I'll stick with Zephyr's for late night ice-cream.

YUM YUM YUM. You have got to check out Margie's! I come to Chicago once a year and it is first on my "to do list". Any of the ice cream dishes will satisfy your cravings. If you go during the winter, get an order of their hot chocolate.
