Editorial Review for Mutiny – by John Dugan

The Scene
Cruddy, but heavenly so; the decor in the deteriorated two-room bar consists of a historic photo, brick walls, innumerable dart-throwing trophies and ceiling tiles painted by local artists. The beat-up floor seems to abruptly stop and start, and the back bar is piled high with kegs. The welcoming crowd ranges from laid-back young rockers and neighborhood barflies to a few decked-out couples seeking adventure. In the rear room, local bands plug in and get loud on the small stage.

The Draw
Free live music, free pool and extremely cheap beer by the mini-pitcher (more than two pints of American brews) add up to one heck of a raucous, good time. The sound system gives sonic muscle to green indie, funk and metal bands with names like the Fertile Minds, Los Gatos Diablos and Gutter City. There's also a solid jukebox (Social Distortion and 7 Seconds) and a stocked cigarette machine.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Mini-pitchers are a paltry $3.50 on Mondays, when there's no live music scheduled.

Know Before You Go

Live music and pool aren't the only recreation here; the bar has half-a-dozen professional-level dartboards. Call ahead to find out about competitive events.

The Extras

"Bands Wanted!" proclaims the sign painted on the bar's window. Interested musicians should call for more information.

pretty divey, but worth the free cover every night. a lot of punk rockers, or what's left of them anyway. bands every night, mostly "punk"-style music but there are many in-betweeners.

Pros: cheap, no cover, "punk" music

Cons: divey, dark, "punk" music

This is one of the BEST bars in Bucktown - Logan Square that features LIVE Bands that are Local Favorites or the White Line Feaver bands that hit the road hitting bars along the way .. One of the last Good Bars in the USA that gives bands a break they need

Pros: Music, Atmosphere

Cons: Parking

Local bands rock, while Logan Square patrons drink cheap, at one of the city's most charming dive bars.  See the full editorial review.
