Editorial Review for Universal Gear – by Nikki Turec
The Scene
Techno beats echo throughout this two-story shop, where sales staff is anxious to assist. This is not your everyday menswear store--the silver pants, psychedelic-colored sunglasses and dog-collar-type necklaces will make you realize this quickly. The owners of the store also stress comfort with their athletic line of apparel.
The Goods
A variety of items such as underwear, sweatshirts, CDs, accessories, trendy shirts and pants reassure men that they too can materialize their identities through fashion. Popular-brand items such as Kenneth Cole leather and suede jackets, Reaction and Sketchers shoes are available at reasonable prices. If you're feeling creative, look for black pants decorated with newspaper headlines.

Universal Gear is one of the CLEANEST, best kept stores in Chicago! The quality of merchandise is wonderful, and every item in the store is either folded or neatly hung in it's proper place. It's amazing how they keep the store so neat and tidy. The one 'con' was some poor customer service. When I went in, I was almost ignored until I asked for someone's help. Then I had no problem at all. The salespeople had a little trouble in acknowledging my existence at first, but when adequately prodded was great.
Pros: Lit, bright, CLEAN!, Organized store, Very nice selection
Cons: Customer service..., ...kinda stuck up., No parking
