Fine Wrigleyville favorite rewards its regulars with fresh, inventive American cuisine..
The Scene
A neighborhood crowd buzzes most nights at the Outpost, whose unassuming exterior gives way to a cozy, copper-ceilinged space with warm yellow and exposed brick walls. Old model planes, maps and drawings suggest the romance of the Australian outback, inspiring a relaxed mood in the couples sitting at close tables in the intimate room.
The Food
The smart, contemporary American menu boasts several instant favorites. Grilled prawns have a spicy watermelon glaze so hot it'll make you sweat; tender, peppery roasted pork chop is paired with hearty cheese grits and lovely greens with smoked bacon apple vinaigrette. The kitchen is wild about game: Zesty buffalo sausage stars in a tasty, slightly doughy pizza, while smoked wild boar shows up with tortellini in another. For dessert, the signature banana wonton is a scrumptious standard: crispy, dusted lightly with cinnamon and served with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream.
Excellent. Both the service and the food at The Outpost were excellent. We ordered one of the specials of the night -- venison -- and it was outstanding. The chef came out to ask how it was. The wine that we ordered was not available so they made a substitution which was a perfect match for the venison. I had the bread pudding and it was great! My husband had the banana wonton and loved it also. The staff went out of their way to be friendly.
