What Our Expert Scouts Say

Chicago Diner
December 27, 2012

I'm not a vegetarian and am pretty picky about vegetarian food (when I decide to be good). Chicago Diner isn't the BEST, but it is one of the oldest, and you walk out feeling like you made a good decision.

Great vegan dishes - the milkshakes are to die for and the buffalo wings are nice and spicy.

All & all a wonderful restaurant. Everything was wonderful, the food was exceptionally delicious. Our server was an absolute delight. He was also very well informed about all of the food. The atmosphere was casual yet fun. This is now one of my new favorite restaurants in Chicago.

Vegan paradise (great for meat eaters too). Well, great for the non bigoted meat eaters. Fantastic and novel vegan cuisine, and even beers. Desserts tempt from the freezer case like the Sirens to doomed sailors.

The Pros and Cons of Chicago Diner. The Chicago Diner puts the misconception that vegeterian & vegan food is bland & boring, to rest! Their food is very flavorful & hearty. With their vast menu, even meat eaters will not feel left out, most of them wind up liking dishes they may not have tried otherwise. The Diner is small & can get very busy at times, (I avoid it on weekends when it gets loud & cramped). The downfall is the service. I wish the servers were more attentive, I have often felt ignored waiting to be seated, & for the food can take awhile too. But the food is worth it, & they also have great drinks. I love the blueberry margaritas, which are sweet & refreshing. Aside from the service, the food is delicious & always hits the spot. There is something for everyone to eat there!

This eatery with a conscience serves vegetarian food even a carnivore can love.. The Scene
The neo-deco style and bar stools say "diner," but the food is far from anything you'd find at a greasy spoon. Robin's-egg blue tables, chipper staff and cruelty-free food all make for a sunny-side-up demeanor. The young to middle-aged patrons even look healthier than your average Joe.

The Food
Seitan (a wheat-based meat substitute) is the star here, featured in most of the entrees and sandwiches. A Southwestern/Spanish accent shows up in tostadas and the popular "No Meata Fajita." The veggie chili combines spices that melt together in aromatic bliss--you'll never miss the meat. The Reuben is also a favorite, made with seitan on dark rye with onions, peppers, sauerkraut and Swiss or soy cheese. Vegan baked goods are a specialty and include biscuits and gravy for brunch, plus muffins, bread and health bars. Accompany your meal with organically grown, fresh-squeezed orange or carrot juice.

Even if you aren't a vegan/vegitarian. It's too bad that most meat eaters aren't open to trying out vegan food. Chicago Diner does it right. I always get the loaded nachoes-soy style and a chocolate soy-milkshake. I leave stuffed and with leftovers. The place isn't very big. In the summer there is a back yard to dine in, but in the winter everyone packs into the tiny front. Once your food comes, you forget that you are eating in a strangers lap.

cheap, friendly and tasty!. I ordered the bayou tofish and it was excellent. The prices are very very reasonable and the desserts are delicious. the staff was very friendly and made you seem right at home. it's a little far from downtown though if you are just looking for a quick place to grab lunch. (about 3.5 miles: 15-20 minutes travel time)

A lot for your money. Compared to other Vegetarian/Vegan restaurants. Chicago Diner gives you an awesome Homestyle taste. The portions are large for the price you pay. Service is a little slow, but it's worth the wait. I highly recommend the Philly (soy) cheese steak sandwich.

Meals that make you feel good after eating. With many vegetarian/vegan resturants leaning towards Asian dishes/resturants -The Chicago Diner is great for classic homemade meals that many vegetarians miss -Due to their usual meat ingredient. Nice atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff and excellent food. I've never had a bad meal there. I strongly recommend their weekly specials -Especially their [almost weekly] various bean skillet specials. Weekends are usually packed but their turnover rate is fast. I've never waited for more than 10-15 mins. Non-vegetarians won't miss the meat.

Everything but the service.... The best thing from this restaurant is the food; it is simply awesome! The only flaw that my companion and I noticed, was the service; these guys are very young and they seem to have no experience! jajaja!

But don't worry about it! I bet you can handle that. Besides, you go to a restaurant to enjoy the meals, not the service!

Check out the diner!. I absolutely love the chicago diner. It's my favorite veggie restaurant I have visited so far. The people are great. They offer a cook book and they sell t-shirts. The waiters and waitresses are always great and interesting to talk to. Order a smoothie! I highly recommend Solar Flares and the giant nachos appetizer.
