“The atmosphere is fun, but the place is waaaay packed.”
“Bottom line= great bar.”
“Nice new space, but need NEW bartenders!”
SPIN is located on Halsted at Belmont, the Gateway of Chicago's exciting Northalsted strip. SPIN offers daily specials to satisfy your thirst for the best in nightlife and entertainment. We have two dance floors, 4 full-service bars and several spacious lounge areas to choose from. In addition we offer VJs, DJs, Pool Tables, Drag Queen hosts, Live talent and More! …
Spin is known as the gay nightclub place to be on Wednesday nights. While the drinks are average, the place gets totally hoppin' after 10 PM every Wednesday night with all types of people from freaks, bi, straight, to gay. Friday night is "shower night" - don't miss it.
Nasty, and not in a good way.
If you want to feel like you're in a circuit party two hours after it's over, this is the bar for you.
The staff looked like they did not want to be there- and it soon became obvious why. Some super-dramatic person (I'm assuming it was the guy in charge) was chastising workers about the most inane things, such giving too many napkins to a customer or to take off their clothes to conform to a dress state akin to a bathhouse.
I was most put off by something I overheard at the time, but didn't process right away (or I would have been out of there SO fast). That same guy in charge was ranting about how he wanted to get rid of the 'ghett*' element, as they 'did not pay much' for drinks and 'caused all the problems'. The comment seems like it could have been racially charged, but as I didn't hear the whole conversation, he could have been merely misusing 'ghett*'.
However, I feel that it's very bad PR to not even have the forethought to say such things in the presence of patrons. This bar needs more patrons from the looks of the Wednesday I went (which is supposed to be their big night), and making them uncomfortable and being unprofessional just drove another one away. There are many gay bars in Lakeview; save yourself the hassle and stay away.
Sleazy and Shady. This is now possibly the worst run bar in Lakeview. Any place that makes Berlin look like a classy bar is frightening. This used to be a place that felt very warm and open to all. It was a neighborhood-type bar. However, in October/November, the character of the bar changed dramatically. Slowly, all of my favorite bartenders were being terminated or quit; and they were replaced with boys that didn't look old enough to smoke, let alone drink. The employees were now all wearing underwear only, and some looked tweeked out. Illicit substances penetrated the bar, and one of my friends claims that he saw the head manager snorting coke in the bathroom recently. The drink specials were whittled down and prices were raised. Most of the women were fired from the staff and the overall atmosphere became toxic toward females. I wasn't comfortable bringing my female friends or older male friends in because of the change of atmosphere (and our tabs were often ridiculously large). The straight male staff was also terminated, and I've only seen two non-white employees. To top that all off, there's a rumor that the bar owner (who's straight), donated to the pro-Prop 8 campaign in California. I can't substantiate it, but I'm already frustrated enough with this bar to stop patronizing it. If you want easy access to illicit substances and a twink-only crowd, this is your bar. If you want something a little more mature, go elsewhere
Nice new space, but need NEW bartenders!. I just went to spin last night (2/11/09 Wends) and was SO DISAPPOINTED in the BARTENDERS professionalism. I had gotten a drink and had finished it. I went back to the same bartender for another. I waited in line, then he just ignored me and kept taking, making and serving everyone else. After waiting for like 15 mins, I kindly waved my hand trying to get his attention, and continue to ignore me. My friend had walked right up and ordered a drink with no problem. That's when I got ticked off. You would think that TIPS would matter to this guy, but i guess not. The new space in the club is nice but they need new NICE none-ignoring bartenders. Oh and the drinks are super cheaply made, even on regular nights. Avoid the bartender with black hairy arms.
Best Bar Ever . . . Great Bartenders. I love SPIN!! I have to say this is the greatest bar I've seen in Chicago, and I've seen a lot of (gay) bars in Chicago. We were there on a Wed. night and came back for more on Saturday. It wasn't that crowded Saturday, so we were able to sit down and talk with a really nice bartender. He had a lot of tats (numbers around his arm but it looked pretty cool), and I have to say he was the nicest bartender. He made us feel right at home and joked around with us. There was no smoke either of the two nights. It was a little crowded Wednesday, but I think that added to the excitement of the bar. Bottom line= great bar.
Not all gay men look alike--just check out the wild mix of freaks, punks and hotties here..
The Scene
Gosh, it's so ... red. Blood-red walls, red curtains and red light fixtures give faces an eerie tint at this video bar, which passes on most diva-pop in favor of edgier alt-rock, comedy and the occasional South Park rerun. The front room offers two pool tables, a big island bar with a half-dozen video monitors and a dinky side lounge. In the back room (open after 10pm Wed-Sun), which pulses with DJ-spun house music, party boys and girls groove on the dance floor and sprawl on couches in the adjacent lounge.
The Draw
A gay, straight and bi crowd of edgy young boys and girls ready to play. Wednesday is by far Spin's most popular night: For a cover charge of $5, you can buy any draft beer or well drink for just a buck.
Wednesday nights. get crowd on wednesday. very crowded after 10pm. drinks for a buck. good mix of people. music is good.
Wednesdays Rule. Spin is quite a fun place on Wednesday nights. The atmosphere is fun, but the place is waaaay packed. Besides Humpday there isn't many other days I'd stop in, with the possible exception being the shower contest (which doesn't always even happen if people don't volunteer). Nevertheless it's the place to be on a Wednesday night and everyone and their mother knows it =)
Girl's best dream. So, where can you go to be surrounded by gorgeous guys and not be bothered by unwanted passes, etc. when you want to shake your booty? Yep, this would be it. With two dance areas, it is fun to listen to top tunes in the video bar or for more adventurous type, the dj spins lots of great dance hits on the dance floor.
Mixed Fruit, not fancy drinks.
SPIN offers someone for everyone. The widest variety of people in Boystown is at Spin.
Good rooms (large-ish), the front noisy bar with pool, and the less frantic (though not quiet) back room(s), with couches & chairs, and good people watching on the dance floor. And of course, the Friday night shower contests are always great fun. Don't go here for fancy drinks; go to see something you haven't seen before. It's one of the most girl-friendly Boystown bars, too.
Very diverse crowd, even for Boystown.
young crowd. Spin is packed and stuffy and loaded with bois. I went once...never again.
