Editorial Review for Berlin – by Jennifer Olvera
The Scene
Long known as one of the city's premier gay bars, this hetero-friendly spot still pulls out all the stops, thanks to grinding beats and no-holds-barred dancing. Whether cutely coiffed, shirtless or dressed in all-out drag, guys here (and their female entourages) know how to get down and dirty, making the vivid '60s-meets-'70s decor--wood-paneled walls with bold polka-dot cutouts--a mere backdrop; dark exterior windows keep inside antics under wraps.
The Draw
This is raciness at its best, particularly past midnight. Berlin is full of gay, gay-curious and gay-loving individuals chugging Jager shots, froufrou drinks and standard mixed potions. Rotating DJs regularly spin danceables from Fischerspooner, the Streets and Ladytron, but the vibe can vary greatly from night to night. For a dance club, drinks are surprisingly cheap and hefty.

The most open-minded place in Chicago -- gay and straight mingle here, drink a huge amount, smoke, dance (sometimes better, sometimes worse), and, yes, engage in (mostly consensual) touching. If you are a wilting lilly, you will not like it here; nor are white-hatted fratboys welcome (unless gay.) Men who attend are either cut and friendly gay men, or freaks like me who enjoy the anything-goes atmosphere and the complete absence of attitude. In many ways a bit like Mos Eisley's Cantina, the rumor is the Bjork considers it a place to stop by when she passes through the city.
Pros: friendly to a fault
Cons: not for the shy or unfabulous

We were out Monday nite. The music was great, and it was fine that there was only four people dancing - but when a taller man, long-haired bare-chested, and in a harness- mind you this was all fine- when he came up - without introducing himself, and put his nose in my friends hair- that was it! We left that place quickly. My friends were very upset, they yelled all the way back to the apartment. I am not being biased about this. I love Berlin. I dance there regularly. But when we are accosted by unfriendly people- we say something.
