The Scene – In bustling Little India, Udupi Palace offers "Pure Vegetarian South Indian Cuisine" that's regarded highly by neighborhood families and visitors to Devon Avenue. Gold trim, pale green walls, rows of wooden tables and paintings of Hindu goddesses adorn the casual spot. – – The Food – Start with hot samosas or Udupi's appetizer assortment (lentil donut, samosa, panir pakora and more). Regulars opt for dosai (large crepes) and malabar adai (lentil pancakes), which are perfect platforms for the chutneys and sauces brought to the table. Staples like palak panir…

Awful customer service and pathetic food
by conoisur at Citysearch
I took my friend who was starved for South Indian Thali to this supposedly good place based on the reviews online. It happened to be the day before 4 th July and we hoped for some great food if not any discount. We reached there little late because of the traffic at around 9.00pm. We were seated promptly by the guy and with `a la cart came the rude shock. Half of the items on the card were not available of them included the Thali too. Having driven all the way we decided to eat some thing instead of nothing. Vegetable biryani tasted like vegetable pulav and bissibella bath (sambar rice) had loads of capsicum making both unpalatable. The chole bhatura was reasonable. we ordered Mango lassi which never made it to our table but was conveniently billed. The service was pathetic and insensitive to the customer needs. I wonder what it takes to get some service here. Subtle eye contact to animated hand gestures ... nothing seemed to work. Bottom line: Go to this place if you cannot get food any where else
- Pros: Average ambience and nice variety offered in Thali
- Cons: Poor service and not authentic Indian food
Unremarkable, but will I will try the thali if I go back.

Went last night with my wife, our 3 month-old infant, and a friend. Total bill, 51 dollars:
Potato-"stuffed" dosai: large crispy thin flatbread with a dollop of potatoes and folded over in half. The bread was nicely browned, fresh off the griddle and hot and crispy - its texture was the highlight of the meal. The potatoes were quite ordinary and unspectacular. The accompanying brown lentil sauce that was quite tasty and which I ate over rice after the dosai was eaten.
Muttar Paneer: Disappointing. Quite plain. Lacked a tangy tomato note. One dimensional. And did not have enough peas! Is this a North India dish? Perhaps it should be removed from the menu.
A burrito-like thing that had potatoes inside. Probably the same potatoes as in the dosai - boring. The outer wrapper was also quite plain. Not worth 3 dollars let alone 8 or 10.
Sweet and sour eggplant: Greasy! The eggplant was roasted in the tandoor but did not pick up any roasted or smoky flavor. Maybe would work as a thali dish.
Kulfis: we tried both the mango and pistachio. They were creamy and not too sweet, their flavors could have been more pronounced. Quite tasty but I doubt they were made in the restaurant.
There were side sauces that came in small thali dishes which were made with care and done well. I'm sorry I can't name them. I think they may be the strengths of the restaurant. This may be a place to order thali and nothing else. I'm sorry I didn't know that before I went. I tried getting recommendations from our server, but his English was quite weak, and I couldn't get my head out of North India mode quickly enough.
Nothing I ate aside from the texture of the dosai gave me the desire to return. But to be fair, I think I missed this restaurant's sweet spot.
The atmosphere was good. Indirect lighting, nice photography. Staff attentive, perhaps stared too much, although our baby is the cutest baby ever! Hope this helps.
- Pros: Flat breads
- Cons: North Indian food not done well.
Excellent thali

I come here all the time with large groups to have massive amounts of very tasty vegetarian cuisine. I like to order the Royal Mysore Thali and a Dosa Thali to share with every 4 people or so.
It is BYOB and the staff is very accomodating with large parties.
- Pros: Excellent food, great value, great for large groups.
- Cons: Perhaps not the most romantic or atmospheric restaurant
Large portions, authentic South Indian, at an affordable price!

If you're looking for authentic South Indian food, then your search ends at the Udipi Palace. There is excellent variety and you pay a very affordable price for the experience. This dine-in restaurant has a tasteful decor and the waiters were well trained and courteous. I visited on a Tuesday afternoon at 1pm and there was no wait to be seated. For those that can handle some heat, the Palak Dosa is a must. Also the Panneer Roll (north indian dish, really) was served with the most amazing date sauce I have ever tasted. I'm going there again today, this time with family. Can't wait.
- Pros: Authentic South indian food, affordable price, and nicely done interiors.
- Cons: The store front is small and can be easily missed for other larger restaurant signs.
