Editorial Review for Sushi X – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
Tucked away behind a barely marked, blink-and-you'll-miss-it black facade, this chic West Town sushi spot does mostly takeout and delivery--there's no formal waitstaff, and just a few high tables and couches for seating. But with the room's cool look (metallic gray tin ceiling, cobalt blue walls, hidden kitchen) and high-energy vibe (pumping techno music, DVDs projected on the walls), it's no surprise that local loft-dwellers are tempted to stay and lounge awhile.
The Food
Sushi X specializes in maki (the raw stuff doesn't travel as well), with a menu of about 30 different rolls, from simple sake (fresh salmon) to the gargantuan Godzilla: a crunchy, delicious monster of tempura shrimp, spicy mayo, scallion, roe, cream cheese, tempura crumbs, avocado, eel sauce and wasabi mayo. Other highlights: fragrant miso soup, served hot in a coffee mug; refreshingly tangy creamy ginger salad; warm asparagus beef rolls, and a meaty double stack rolled with tuna, yellowtail and salmon.

Great Price, extremely cool staff. Wait is not long. The Godzilla roll is addictive. This place was my first ever sushi experience and since then has not been the only one. I eat sushi in every city and every country I visit. This is by far the best!! thanks for introducing me to sushi!!!

Obviously the people who own sushi X are giving their employees incentives to post great reviews. I am born and raised in Chicago and hands' down this place does not belong in the top ten or twenty for that matter. Their sushi is not terrible and the price is fine, but if you are an intermidate to advanced sushi eater don't waste your time. The rolls are rolled without care and almost seem like they are pre-rolled earlier that night. I ordered the spicy tuna roll from here on three diferent occasions and every time it was ovesaturated with mayonaise and the ends of the roll were hardly worth eating. If all you eat is tuna, salmon and california roll this place falls just below the average line. From a true chicago sushi lover based on quality only on recommend Meiji, Sushi Wabi or Starfish. btw, my food tastes are much more advanced then my spelling :-)
Pros: price
Cons: quality
