“loved the Grand Ave location.”
“This is/was my favorite Mexican food in town.”
“The staff was friendly.”
NO MORE MEXICAN FOOD???. This is/was my favorite Mexican food in town. Marg's were good and carne asada was exceptional, as were the white cheese enchiladas. But alas on our last visit we were advised that they were switching to a hard-to-come-by food type in Chicago: Italian. Go figure. I was advised that they have a location down south. Pity. I loved the Grand Ave location.
Amelia's Mexican Grill not so good. It surprised me to find out that the soda refills were extra and the chips and salsa were also extra, even though the waiter tried to refill our chips without confirming this extra charge... sneaky. I will never be going back to this place. Also the margaritas?? 9 bucks for an 8 oz. drink. No WAY!
Overpriced and dull.
My husband and I went to Amelia's last night and were extremely disappointed. We had heard it had great margaritas - but we didn't find anything special about them - except that they were way overpriced - $8.50 for 10oz w/ Patron. While we there, we learned that extra chips and salsa are $2.50 ($1 for the salsa and $1.50 for the chips!) They also charge for soda refills.
Don't waste your time and money here. If you want a tasty margarita and good Mexican food that includes unlimited chips and salsa, go to Fernando's up on Lincoln!
Just one complaint. The staff was friendly. I loved the outdoor seating. The salsa was hot--just how I like it. My only complaint may seem petty, but it bothers me enough to come home and write a review...Amelia's charges for soft drink refills. I paid $3 for about 18 ounces of Sprite. Most of our party drank at least two alcoholic beverages. We ordered appetizers, guacamole, entrees and dessert. Our bill was well over $100--it WAS delicious--but being charged for Sprite refills on top of all of that has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Cozy, Romantic, Authentic Mexican. ..and by "authentic" i mean mainly the atmosphere. Amelia's does not have mariachi's, kitsschy Mexican artifacts, etc. It's a low-key restaurant which delivers excellent food in a non-festive (re: lets get drunk on tequilla and eat burritos!!!) environment. i've been several times- both me and my partner only ever get the same items. me, the chiles rellenos, she the fish "tacos machos". theyre both so excellent we refuse to branch out. the info on citysearch is a bit ou tdated- amelia's has a liquor liscence, and their margaritas are great.
Authentic Mexican fare served in a date-worthy River West setting..
In Short
Industrial traffic rumbles by the big picture windows of this restaurant at the intersection of Grand, Ogden and Racine, but inside it's quiet and comfortable, with friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere. Golden yellow walls painted with diamond shapes warm up the airy dining room, where couples fill in at tables and munch on chips and mild, fresh salsa. The menu is authentic and ambitious: Along with fajitas, enchiladas and steak tacos, you'll find zingy, chunky ceviche, big pans of queso fundido with chorizo, and specials like chili-crusted pork tenderloin and leg of lamb with chilies and fried potatoes. Drenched in caramel, flan makes for a sweet, cinnamon-laced finish.
