Pretentious without reason!!!. My wife and I had high hopes for our dinner date at Merlo on Maple, We were placed in a cold corner in the basement section of the restaurant, Music was being played out of a boom box in the corner, The server was friendly but not well informed about the meals, My entree was undercooked my wife's was so spicey that she could not finish it.

We happily skipped the after dinner and payed the unreasonably hefty bill and got out.

We will not be back!!!!!

I felt like royalty. Not sure how someone else gave this a bad review. The owners are from Bologna and wow can the wife cook! She even came out to our table to say hi. The pasta is homemade, cooked to perfection and accompanied by a sauce that is so flavorful, you just want to chew slow enough to enjoy each and every bit. Our waiter was so helpful with the wine selection and was very attentive to our needs. This is true, authentic Italian food and all my Italian friends adore it. Although it is pricey, it is WELL worth the money if you want a nice night out in a beautiful restaurant with great food. I would recommend this to everyone. DOn't forget to make reservations. It's a popular spot. Nothing bad to say here.

Harvey Peyton. This place is located in a three story mansion but if all the hot air and pretention were drained out you would be eating in a basement; undoubtedly the most over-hyped and under delivered dining experience we have had in Chicago; rude and inattentive wait staff, cold food and poorly prepared and presented entrees; just an overblown "yuk" that should not be inflicted on any unsuspecting couple; stay away at all costs; if you blunder in by mistake--run like Hell for the door!

Authentic Bolognese cuisine in a stately townhouse setting charms a professional Gold Coast crowd.. The Scene
Occupying a series of intimate rooms in a three-level Gold Coast townhouse, this welcoming Italian restaurant makes dating couples and groups of suits feel equally welcome. Handsomely stained wainscoting accents warm golden walls adorned with framed landscape paintings. Enthusiastic servers extol the merits of the kitchen's northern Italian specialties.

The Food
A complimentary basket of warm rosemary crisps whets the appetite, paving the way for tempting starters like light, lovely rolled eggplant and beef carpaccio sprinkled generously with shaved truffles and celery. Light pasta sauces let the fresh ingredients speak for themselves, from earthy porcini mushrooms with tortelloni to veal ragu paired with taglioline. Tempting meat and fish options include pepper-crusted tuna, stewed veal osso buco with saffron risotto, and oven-cooked red snapper and scallops. Kissed with caramel, panna cotta is a simple, sinful dessert.
