Editorial Review for Drake Bros.' – by Alice Van Housen
The Scene
Business groups and special-occasion celebrants populate this sprawling, handsome steakhouse, touted as the dream restaurant of the Drake Hotel's founders (circa 1918). The former Oak Terrace has been redone in masculine hues of camel and oxblood, mid-toned wood and graphic upholstery. Windows face the lakefront and Michigan Avenue; upbeat crooner tunes fill the air.
The Food
Think classic steakhouse fare. For starters, fluffy seared crab cakes float in creamy mustard sauce; enormous Drake Bros.' salad is a hearty combo of baby shrimp, tomato, cucumber, avocado and corn with silky blue cheese dressing. Nostalgic Bookbinder's, a tomato-based red snapper soup laced with sherry, makes an appearance. The house cut of prime beef is a 16-ounce, marrow-crusted hunk of New York strip with cabernet sauce. The menu lists 10 steaks, plus a handful of chops and seafood entrees. Desserts are standards like carrot cake and profiteroles.

This was the Steak Club's first time at Drake's. I was very impressed with the elegant dining room. There were 16 of us so we were seated at a long table. I had a great bowl of the chowder to start. I had a very good salad. I ordered a large filet-medium rare. The waitress brought a petite filet and tried to pawn it off on me. I informed her that I ordered the large filet. She took the small filet only to return with it a short time later. This is inexcuseable. She also tried to pull a fast one by serving a diet Coke as a regular Coke. I overheard her say she we would serve it anyway after finding out it was diet. We must have looked stupid. The food made up for the service however. The steak was one of the best I've had.
Pros: great steak, great soup, great salad
Cons: lousy service, sneaky waitress, expensive
