In Short – More than just a coffeehouse, this South Loop hangout displays the work of local artists and regularly hosts open mic nights for poets and jazz, classical and other musicians. Diners are also encouraged to play chess, checkers, dominos or games of their own as they munch on desserts like carrot cakes or chocolate flan. Menu items favor Mexican favorites such as scrambled eggs served with chorizo, chicken quesadillas and pico de gallo.

#1 Pastel De Tres Leches (Mexican super-moist cake!)

by gisel at Citysearch

A few weeks ago, we had a birthday party for a good friend of mine and the theme was "Fiesta"...I was in charge of the cake. I suggested the 'Pastel De Tres Leches' and a few of my friends were not fans of this type of cake. I assured them that this place was not like any other cake they had tasted and they agreed to try it. During the party, the cake was brought out and everyone was raving about the cake!..even the people that didn't like it in the past. I was asked throughout the night for the information of the place where I had purchased it. Fast forward three weeks and people are still getting in touch with me!

I assure you that you will LOVE their 'Pastel De Tres Leches'....it also comes in a variety of flavors...you have to try it! Trust me when I tell you that you will not regret it. I come from a family that has owned restaurants here in Chicago and I have never had anything quite like this place has.

  • Pros: A place to relax and have a cup of coffe, slice of cake, and a good read.
  • Cons: parking

Great Place to Hang Out

by joelbaze at Citysearch

After moving into the neighborhood, I was on the hunt for a local spot in Pilsen to grab a coffee and a bite. Kristoffer's unique interior design is filled with colorful tones and accented with works of local artists. The simple seating arrangment is always filled with locals clicking away on their laptops, enjoying the free wi-fi with their coffee. The menu brings an authentic flavor of mexican favorites, with fresh ingredients and great flavors. The coffee and espresso menu is excellent with all the selections you would come to expect from a gourmet cafe. However, the main attraction here is the authentic Tres Leches cake! The three milk cake is blended perfectly and it is the one thing you have to try before leaving. I often will pick up a whole cake whenever heading out to a party, and it always gets rave reviews from the crowd. The service is always exceptional, and the owners really care about making this place comfortable for everyone.

  • Pros: Excellent place to drink coffee, grab a bite, and browse the web
  • Cons: Closes early on weekends.
