Jack Rabbit....................Decent. I had heard about jack Rabbit from a few friends so recently went in and gave it a try. I was not as impressed as many others seem to be. Lets start by saying I probably went with too many people (I was with a group of 6) and waited over 40 minutes. The place is very small and does not cater well to large groups. I started with the Tortilla Soup and it was ordinary to say the least. The steak fajitas were good and the meat was well seasoned and well cooked, it was the lone bright spot besides the company I kept. I also sampled a watermelon ceviche that was very bland.
this place is the worst. The service is bad. The food is mediocre at best, and desserts are terrible. They ran out of half the menu (7:00 on a wed. night) - - including cream for our coffee!! This place is awful and won't be open for long.
Colorful Lincoln Square storefront serves Caribbean-inspired plates to a casual neighborhood crowd..
The Scene
Across from the Davis movie theater, this sunny spot is awash in the colors of the islands: Geometric patterns of lime green, aqua blue and yellow cover the walls, while shimmery, blue mosaic tile beckons at the small front bar. Low-key couples and families sit at glass-topped tables, while servers mosey through the room.
The Food
Toucan's Caribbean fare is straightforward and satisfying, with an emphasis on spice. Pleasant starters include a light, smooth crab and avocado roll, plus full-flavored, flaky empanadas filled with beef and drizzled with spicy chipotle mayo. Among entrees, skewered lime shrimp is a seafood favorite: colorful skewers with red and green peppers and pineapple paired with intriguing bacon-wrapped pineapple. Other popular plates include lip-stinging, boneless jerked chicken, coconut shrimp, and sides of black beans and rice and jalapeno-sweet potato mash. Roasted pineapple drizzled with caramel and shredded coconut makes for a smoky-cool finish.
They dont know Jack about service or value.
This is a cozy space and had good drinks. Now having said something nice (like my momma taught me) -- you should expect to pay $8-$10 for these tiny versions of drinks.
The food was okay
... but there are plenty of Tex/Mex places in Chicago.
Life's too short for overpriced food that's just okay. Plus the sides of salsa, guacamole, etc are smaller than drug-testing sized containers.
Service may take 6-8 weeks--
I'm not sure why there was only 1 or 2 waiters on a Saturday night but considering the small space I was surprised to wait 20 minutes for the waiter to check on us after we received our food.
Don't wait to ask the hostess for an update!
I was a little disappointed when I heard about the 30 minute wait, but was pleased that the hostess took our cell phone. After killing about an hour at a nearby cafe --- we grew restless. The hostess' update was that it would be another 15 minutes. After complaining, they sat us at the bar and said it would be "any minute." 20 minutes later --- we finally got our table.
Sorry for the rant -- I've lived in the Square for 6 years now and I swear I'm used to 2 star & 3 star joints; but when you pay $70 for a dinner for 2 (with drinks) you have the right to expect something better than okay. Like I said --- life is too short and Chicago has so much better to offer.
Salut & adios amiagos
