Editorial Review for Crew Bar + Grill – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
A sports-lovin' gay crowd buzzes at this modern, masculine hangout, where college banners and sports memorabilia mingle with stainless-steel accents, a polished black-granite bar and autographed photos from out athletes Greg Louganis and Billie Jean King. College and pro sports air on 16 TVs (including four large screens); those who'd rather play can opt for pool or darts.
The Draw
Crew's menu goes way beyond wings and nachos, with a full slate of winning, creative takes on old favorites. Crab cakes are fork-tender and surprisingly meaty, with zingy chipotle dipping sauce on the side; a "twisted" BLT reinvents the classic sandwich, adding red onion, shredded cheddar and a smear of jalapeno cream cheese. Other favorite plates include spicy buffalo chicken salad po'boy, served cold and topped with crumbled blue cheese; and worthy sides like crisp fries (available in plain, garlic or spicy varieties), Southern-style coleslaw, and three-cheese macaroni.

Insider Tips
When to GoDuring the day and early evening, sports is king; late at night, VJs play an eclectic mix of music videos, from Duran Duran to Modest Mouse.
What to DrinkThe bottled beer list is expansive, with 40 brews, including Belgium's Duvel and DeKoninck, Red Stripe, Boddington's and Goose Island Honker's Ale. The signature "beergarita" is a beer, tequila and margarita mix that's a whole lot tastier than it sounds.

I am not gay or really into sports, but I still enjoy this friendly hangout for its excellent food! You can't go wrong with brunch or lunch here - coming earlier (between 11-noon) there's no wait for a table. It can get crowded during games, but the food keeps me coming back. I appreciate the owners taking a chance on Uptown!
Pros: Good food, brunch
Cons: Can get crowded

I am not really into sports, but because this is such an amazing place (besides the obvious sports drawback) it's become one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. The menu is fantastic, I would recommend the classic buffalo wings and loaded fries. But when you're not in the greasy mood, their wraps and salads are beyond tasty. The staff is welcoming (even if you're not gay) and friendly. The servers are 1/2 the draw. They are attentive, but not obtrusive; fun not silly. If you're into sports, their sound system is really well done, it sounds like an action-packed movie theater. Very surround. Oh and karaoke every Tuesday, with crazy - good for a laugh - prizes.
Pros: Food and Staff.
Cons: Parking can be difficult at the wrong times.
