“The gentleman was very nice and friendly but I told him there was no way he was going to get that armoire up to my second floor condo.”
“called because listed #3 on this site (clearly i didn't scroll down to read reviews) & the first 2 companies were expensive.”
ONE OF WORST EXPERIENCES OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. DO NOT USE..
called because listed #3 on this site (clearly i didn't scroll down to read reviews) & the first 2 companies were expensive. "bargain moving" is NOT the way to go. here's highlights:
-3 guys - 1old, 1chatty, 1mildly retarded - were an hour &a half late, leaving half an hour of elevator time.
-took 3 hours to load truck.
-2 dressers & coffee table damaged.
-took cigarette breaks every 15 minutes & one had one with an inch of ash waiting to fall as he was carrying my couch.
-moving truck started to roll into street b/c they hadn't set the parking brake.
-i had to move things & they gave me that condescending "hey little lady you shouldn't be moving such heavy things").
-at new place, took 30 minutes to get from the front of building to loading dock, which was directly below the building. got one elevator load moved.
-i called to say we'd have to continue the next morning & bossman tried to tell me other moves were scheduled. they left with all my stuff (a nerve-wracking prospect. i half expected never to see it again) & returned the next day.
-in the midst of this, bossman called them to get my credit card so he could run it. how he was going to do this when i was paying hourly & we weren't finished is beyond me. he didn't get a hold of his guys & i'd wised up & got my number back.
day 2:
-hour & a half late. i called bossman to find out where they were; after my initial call he started screening & refused to pick up the phone ever again that morning.
-managed to get everything unloaded in an hour, being rough.
-didn't disassemble/reassemble bed..
-the guy had nerve to ask for a tip. i'd kept my cool until now b/c my possessions were in their "care." said i was being generous paying $300. he said they have no control over elevators & i reminded him he did have control over when he showed up. i expected him to smash something on his way out. i'd have been scared if i'd been alone with him.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!. I scheduled a move over a month in advance and even called to confirm the move a few days before, which they did confirm. They called me at 2pm the day before my move and told me "my move had been canceled" because their truck broke yet miraculously they could move me on Sunday. Not only did I end up paying double for new movers but I had to call about 10 different places because Labor Day weekend, I was told, is one of the busiest moving weekends of the year. I never even received an apology from the jerks. I called to speak to the manager, was put on hold FOREVER, so I gave up. My advice to someone looking for movers, spend more cash to get better movers.
Cheapest rate is NOT THE BEST. I used A-Best-Way Moving for a 1 bed room apartment job moving 5 blocks. The 3 man crew promised showed up 1 hour late of my 2 hour reserved elevator time, unprepared, no equipment, did not bring the promised 4 free wardrobe boxes for my clothes, did not have tools to unasemble my bed, I had to look in boxes to find tools. My move should have not taken more than 3 hours (I moved the same amount 1 year ago for 3 hours). This job took 4 1/2 hours. They were constantly absent for up to 15 minutes - all 3 of them. This was the WORST move ever. They did not have the address to where I was moving, although when I called to complain - several times on the day of the move and the following business day, I was told they would check into the situation and would call me back - this was two weeks ago. I have heard nothing. I was told by the only one that spoke English - that he didn't even work for this company. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY
Never again!.
Don't choose A-Best-Way!
I moved last Sunday 4/22/2007 , and the experience is horrible. They promised the it would only take 3hrs, which is shorter than other moving companies. Then three men showed up 1hr earlier than scheduled, and only one man was working as a professional, the other two lazy $%# took one or two small bags a time, and keep asking for water, my wife had to carry boxes and bags down to fasten the process. They took break constantly, and spend 30mins more on the road to our new place to take an other big break. My boxes were carried upside down and sometimes they just dropped my bag or boxes even they've been marked "delicate, be careful please"! 5 hrs in total, and we paid, thought they would eat us alive if we don't pay... (that's for sure) if my wife and I didn't help, they would've taken longer...!!!!
Please think through before you book this moving company!!!
Won't recommend them, or use them again..
I called A-Best Way Moving company this morning for an estimate to get an armoire from Kenosha to Evanston. The gentleman on the phone was nice and asked when I wanted the armoire moved. I told him preferably today, but that I could be flexible on other days this week. He said, "We can do this today." and gave me an estimate. After calling other businesses to check prices I called A-Best back and hired them (their price was the most reasonable).
Imagine my surprise when their guy showed up at my house w/ my 300 pound armoire w/ NO help other than his wife and his three small children. The gentleman was very nice and friendly but I told him there was no way he was going to get that armoire up to my second floor condo. He smiled and said, "We can do it."
There we were, me, him, and his wife, all the while the children were running around, laughing, screaming and crying. We banged the heck out of the armoire, but fortunately it was padded. While we were trying to move it up I called A-Best and spoke w/ a woman. She too (like everyone else) was very friendly and empathized w/ my situation. I told her I can't believe that I'm paying to move my own piece of furniture and that they did not send a second guy (which is what I thought I was paying for). She said, "Let me see what I can do." A few minutes later she called back and told me to call her once the move was complete w/ the damage.
Long story short, the damage amounted to rubbed off corners and a small chunk from the bottom of the unit. I called the lady back and she said, "Sorry, it won't happen again." I asked her what good that did me given that I had just paid full price. All she could say was, "That shouldn't have happened and I'm sorry."
Three hours late, crashed, caused visit from cops. I used this company in May 2005 and would only recommend them if you want a good laugh! The truck showed up with a cardboard sign handwritten and duct-taped saying "A Bestway Movers" - a bad start. They were also three hours late (supposed to arrive at 8am but did not arrive until noon), stating that their early morning move in the suburbs ran behind. One mover was a senior citizen and said his back was bad so he couldn't carry anything heavy. I have an antique piano and explained this to the moving company three times in advance. Unfortunately this was not communicated to the movers and they were visibly upset and sluggish about moving it. About half the money I spent on this move was dedicated to this piano! The truck finally pulled into my new apartment back alley and crashed into the fence - to this day it is still broken. Their truck blocked off cars in the alley, causing quite a riot. $80 of my time and a visit from two cops later - they were able to get away from the shouting match in the alley and finish the job.
Use someone else.
I see in another review they never showed up; if only that had happened to me. Where to start? First, the movers show up telling us we have to pay a "truck watcher" in addition to them, so already we're over the estimate. Then we find an alarmingly high percentage of boxes labeled for the upstairs down in the basement and vice-versa. Finally, the piece de resistance: the movers scratched the hardwood floors BADLY at our old place and management wouldn't do anything but send over a guy with wood putty and some stain. We had to refinish the floors ourselves under threat of litigation.
The movers were nice enough and worked hard, but there are just too many competent moving companies out there to risk using this company, or if you do, make sure you pay extra for insurance, because there's no accountability from management otherwise.
Stay Away. Signed up for a move on October 1 at 7am. When they failed to show, I called at 730 and they said they would be at my place by 9am. After that, they never showed up and wouldnt even answer their phone. This is a sleazy operation and you should stay away from it.
